How easy is it,or hard possibly,to change the front brake pads on a Vauxhall 1700 Combo?

I am no mechanic, but quite capable of using tools and have carried out parts that have needed changing in the past. However, changing the pads is a more technical kind of work and needs done correctly for ovious reason.I have seen on the web that a special tool is required in order to depress the piston.

I would like some advice, also that advice maybe to leave alone and use a garage or someone with this experience, thats alright,no offence.

Thank you.How easy is it,or hard possibly,to change the front brake pads on a Vauxhall 1700 Combo?
Hi there it is a lot easier to change brake pads than brake shoes. as you say you are capable to use tools and have done in the past. once you have the Wheel off you will be able to suss out the procedure for taking of calliper you either have to take the whole thing of or just the brake pad holder.

as to needing a special tool well if it is a pressure calliper then All you need is a lever to push the piston back in before you take off calliper, if it is a screw piston then i usually find vice grips or adjustable wrench suffices to screw it back in to calliper. It's actually rather easy but if you haven't seen it done yourself then have it done professionally. It's not an expensive repair so since your life depends on doing it correctly why take a chance, and since it will be your first time doing it if you damage something it could become expensive. It's probably about one hours labor and new pads are inexpensive. It might be a bit more than that if your rotors need to be turned or replaced. I'll guess at about 150 Euros.
I always use a C clamp as long as the piston is compressed evenly and you do one at a time.
Brake pads are normally fairly simple to replace. Remove the wheel, then you will normally have some bolts to undo to release the caliper, take the old pads out, clean up any flaky rusty bits off the caliper slides and then reassemble. Normally a G clamp is all you need to push the caliper piston back far enough to allow it to fit with the new (thicker) pads in place.

If you have any doubt about what you are doing, ask a competent person to give you a hand, or get it done by a garage. Brakes are not the sort of thing to get wrong on a car!

Brake calipers & changing brake pads.?

On my 98 Grand Prix I just got the calipers off and took out the old brake pads. I am now attempting to put in the new pads. But they are so thick that they do not fit. My guess is that I need to create more room by pushing the piston in farther. But how do I do that?Brake calipers %26amp; changing brake pads.?
I sometimes use a large ';C'; clamp. I clamp the back of the caliper to the old pad and tighten slowly to push the piston all the way in. Tighten the clamp real slowly to keep from pushing the fluid too fast and to keep the piston straight.

Good luck.Brake calipers %26amp; changing brake pads.?
some are compressed by force and some require a tool that you twist and when twisted the piston goes in. Try a large wrench or clamp and use the old pads to protect the piston and seal and see if you can push the piston back in. If it doesn't move slowly then the piston needs to be turned to be put back into position. If that is the case go to kragens, autozone and rent the tool.

To easily tell if it is the type that twists in see if there are perpendicular groves on the piston. Basically looks like a screw that would require a very large phillips head.

it would look like this

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/4521/
I use a huge (HUGE!) pair of channel lock pliers. A c-clamp or other device can also work. If it won't budge, you can loosen the bleeder screw to reduce the hydraulic pressure.
USUALLY, if the piston is a hollow-like tube, then they can simply be compressed using a large c-clamp. DONT forget to pop the top off of the master cylinder!!!!! And do this slowly, so you don't rupture the brake line. If the piston is solid-looking with a cap on the end, these are the type that has to be ';screwed'; back in. I have had success using a pair of pliers/channel locks to turn it while I tightened the c-clamp.
Don't loosen your brake lines!! You'll introduce air into the system and have squishy brakes.

Take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir, and take a 'c' clamp and very slowly recompress the piston. Compress it all the way, and the pads will slot in easily. You may have to take some fluid out of the master cylinder, as you compress the caliper piston the level will rise. (Don't spill it, it will eat paint like nobody's business.)

If you don't have a c clamp, use whatever tool will recompress it. but make sure the piston is flat while you're pushing it.

Good luck.
If it is the fronts, you need to compress them.

If you go to the auto zone site you can find a repair guide for this car.
Either with a piston depressing tool or a C-Clamp and block of wood.

Best way to do this is to take the lid off of the master cylinder and cover the opening with a rag. Lets the back pressure ease off a little easier.

Next, place the pad side of an old break pad against the piston and use the piston depressor to recess the piston. It's easy. It just uses pressure on the back of the caliper and with a screw in system, presses the piston back in.

If you don't have one of those, get a C-Clamp and a piece of wood. Press the block of wood against the piston and slowly press the piston back in with the clamp.

I doubt it being a 98 it's a worm gear piston but check to be sure. Some calipers (again, I highly doubt it) use a worm gear to resses the piston. Check for a hex nut on the side of the caliper and turn that counter clockwise.
You can buy the proper tools from Autozone. It cost me $13.00. Its a special tools to push the caliper piston back in. Just ask them and they will sell you the right tools...
The cheap and effective way out is go to Sears and get an adjustable screw carpenters clamp. Place an old brake pad across the caliper piston, slide the clamp behind the caliper and screw the adjustment part of the clamp directly on the old brake pad. The piston will detract fully.

Are there some Allen head bolts on the inner side of them? How do i change the front brake pads on a p reg polo 1L?
most claipers have the two bolts, rip it off install the new pads and you have to open the gap by pushing on the pads to push the pistons back.
As per firat answer, if you look on the inside (engine side) of the caliper, you'll see two rubber plugs, one at either end of where the brake pad is.

Prise them out %26amp; you can then undo the long bolt underneath with a 7mm Allen key - You may be able to undo the front one %26amp; then 'swing' the pad carrier up to replace the pads - if not, just undo the second allen bolt.
Buy the Haynes manual for 拢20. You will be able to do the brake job properly and it will save you a fortune in future.

brakes are wicked easy and really aint tat expensive. unless you need new rotors. DO NOT BUY AUTO PARTS FROM WAL MART! especially something as vital as brakes. go to a good auto parts store (NAPA, Advance Auto, Auto zone, National Auto, etc.) an 05 Malibu im pretty sure has disc brakes in front and drum in back. a set of brake shoes for the discs is usually 30ish. and for the drums, usually like five or ten bucks more. remember NAPA does offer a AAA discount :-) go to napaonline.com or advanceautoparts.com to order parts online or to get a part number and call in the order. thats what i always do. it saves the frustration of going to the store only to find they dont have the part and then having to go back down to the store to get the part the next day after they have it shipped in.How much does it cost to change break pads? how much for brake pads( from walmart)( 05 malibu)?
Do NOT buy parts from WalMart. They carry junk. Go to a reputable auto parts store. Please ignore Thomas's comment about not machining the rotors. He is obviously not a mechanic. The rotors should be resurfaced every time you replace the pads.
Go to the websites of parts dealers like Pep Boys or O'Reilley's, they price the parts for you.
DON'T BUY AUTO PARTS FROM WAL-MART, THEY HAVE CHEAP LOW QUALITY PARTS.

BRAKES ARE IMPORTANT GO TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE OR A DEALERSHIP THAT SERVICES YOUR MAKE OF CAR.
haha, they'll probably outsource the brake pads just like everything they get. Do you really want Brake pads that say ';made in China';. Think about the quality you'll be getting. enough said....
brake pads parts depending on your car can be $30-80. installation should not be more than about $100. if they are not vibrating - tell them NOT to machine the rotors. they will charge you for rotor machine whether they do it or don't.

i suggest somewhere other that Walmart.
I cannot agree more with the above responses, DO NOT BUY FROM WALMART. Go to a good parts store. Probably about $30.
    normally around 20 or $25.

Get a service manual for your bike and follow the instructions. Not a hard job to do.

How to change front brake pads on a 2004 ford focus?

It is very simple to change the brake pads on a ford focus. You will need a hex key set and something for leverage(metal pipe works well).

Open the hood and take off the cap for the brake fluid. Take off the wheel and there are two rubber pieces with plastic caps in the tops of them, one on top of the caliper and one on the bottom of the caliper. If you remove the plastic caps there is a hex bolt under each of them. Take those bolts out with the hex key and pipe for leverage.

Once you do this you will be able to take the caliper off of the bracket holding it over the rotor. When you have the caliper off you will be able to take the outside pad off (just release the clip with a screwdriver and push it in). After that take a C-Clamp and while the inside pad is still on Compress the caliper piston back to its lowest setting. After this remove the inside pad, it should have a clip on the back of it which fits inside of the hollow caliper piston. From here you should be able to reverse the steps and put everything back on. Just make sure that you use the spacers/squealer plates and use the grease from the brake pads on the outside of the pads to reduce noise.

After one side is complete, put everything back together and lower the car and go inside the car and slowly pump the brakes until you have good pressure than complete the other side. After you finish the other side, make sure to put the cap back on the brake fluid and you should be ready to go.

you can get it dont easliy the only hard part will probably be the rust and the rear caliper piston on which you will have to turn counter clockwise and push in at the same time to get the piston to return to allow the calpiter back on to the rotor
    perfectly diy....

but you mention pads and drums, meaning disc and shoes...it may have both depending on the design...best bet is some exploratory examination first[split and look] and go from there....shoe self adjusters can be a pain but that's about it...basic tools only.
as a mechanic myself id advise you to get a mechanic to do it. brakes being an important thing in helping to slown down the car and not kill any one.

But, where should I go to get New Pads, that will Last as Long as the Factory Pads did?!?

I am Aware that they are Probably Ceramic Pads, but the GM Dealer charges INCREDIBLY TOO Much for me to Justify Buying from Them.

I have Changed Brake-pads for People, and have Personally found Ceramic-Pads to Last Longer on Cars. The Pads I get for People come from AutoZone.

I know that there are Expensive Brake-Pads out there that are around $100 a Set, but I am wondering if they are Worth it.

At AutoZone, the Premium-Ceramic Pads are $60 a Set for the Front.

So Ultimately, are the AutoZone Ceramic Pads as Good as what Came with my 2000 Camaro Z28?!? What do You Recommend I use in my Factory Calipers?!?Are Autozone's Premium-Ceramic Brake-Pads as Good as what Came in my 2000 Z28?!?
yes, the cerammic pads will last longer than your factory ones will. ive seen many with over 65,000 on them and we have a fleet of gm trucks. its all i use on them now. you'll be happy with autozones pads. i put them on both my vehicles too!! happy brakingAre Autozone's Premium-Ceramic Brake-Pads as Good as what Came in my 2000 Z28?!?
I would only use AC Delco pads. A possible exception would be Bendix. I know you buy stuff at Autozone, but aside from the Fel-Pro gaskets they sell, their parts have no where near the quality that AC Delco has. I would look online for your brake pads or through an independent parts house that sells AC Delco. If you end up going to the dealer, ask for 10% off. Tell them you're a loyal customer. You may pay more for the real deal, but the real deal will last longer, be quieter, provide less brake fade, and you won't have to change the pads as often. The extra money on Delco pads will be well spent.

If you purchase the original spare pads kit box (- I assume you are asking about the front Disks), Inside the box package you will find a detailed schematic of how to do the work,

This is how i did it myself. It is so easy .

Remove hydraulic fluid reservoir cap to avoid compressed spill outs.

Remove tire and turn the steering wheel as to get access to the brake calipers.

Using a flat ended screw driver apply pressure to the inner side of the caliper between the piston and the disk / support.

After that the caliper can be slided up like a door hinge ( the hinge is the upper portion of the calipers) , just by removing the lower screw.

Remove the anti rattle thin metal (spring acting) pieces , and remove the pads accordingly.

    NOTE:

1.Do one wheel at a time. Thus you will have an assembled caliper for reference of how to reinstall.

    2. info's given are based on my Elantra 2.0 GLS ( model 2002 )

    3. HINT : Do NOT use soft pads as to avoid disk wear. Use original pads or you will have very bad brakes .

Chevys are pretty easy. Make sure you have the correct tool to remove the caliper studs and your pretty much set. Remove the fluid resevoir on the master cylinder. Raise the vehicle and use jack stands. Remove the wheel. Have a strong box ready to lay the caliper on. Remove the caliper bolts and lift off the caliper. Careful not to pull or twist the brake line. Remove the old pads. Use a vise clamp to press the pistons in slowly. Check for worn or leaking boots and seals and replace if neccessary. Install new brake shoes. Scuff the surface of the rotor with 100 grit sandpaper on both sides of the rotor. Reinstall the caliper. Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle. Pump the pedal to adjust the new pads. For the typical back yard mechanic like me, you've got extra time to jack up the wheels and put jack stands under the frame for safety. Then you need the right wrench to remove the caliper bolts which may require a breaker bar to get good leverage on the bolt in many cases. The front caliper pistons can be pushed in with a big C clamp, but rear calipers often need a special tool to turn the caliper back in with. Taking care to get the new pads into the caliper like the old pads you took out and remounting the caliper ends up taking about 3 hours for me and that doesn't count going to get the new pads or cleaning up the tools etc. Rear drum brakes would take longer even if you've done them before (about double the time for me). Of course you may need to take your rotors in to be machined or buy new rotors and install them in some cases.

Brakes should be replaced when they are worn. The mileage does not matter, it depends on ho much of the pad is left.

City driving, even if you use the brakes gently, wears the pads much more quickly than highway driving.

In city driving you are using the brakes often, due to traffic lights and stop signs. When driving on the highway, you can go many miles without touching the brakes at all.

If you do not believe the dealer, have the brakes checked by an independent shop. You may want to have the independent shop do the repairs, seeing as they will most likely be a lot cheaper than the dealer. How long do brake pads last on Nissan Altima 2007?

I think what you're looking for is a Haynes manual. Each manual is dedicated to a particular type of car and includes instructions and diagrams for most basic maintenance tasks. Their website is at http://www.haynes.com/ Although it looks like their US site is under construction their UK site still sells US manuals as well as foreign language versions. Might be worth making a phone call to them to be sure. The link below looks like it could be your car.
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE in this category because our discs (platter) are sealed by Seagate, Maxtor or WD.
Ummmmmm and this has what to do with a computer? If you are going to replace your brakes go buy new breaks and a good repair manual. Then start reading the manual, follow the manual when disassembling the brakes paying close attention to how things come apart. put the new brakes on and reverse the process.

Or you could just take your car to the mechanic and let him do it, that way you know it is done right and you won't go flying off the side of a mountain screaming NO BRAKES! NO BRAKES!

Can't take that damn top nut off.( the one holding the break pad cylinders casing ) Don't go to a dealership, any mexican can do that. Brakes would be easy to change if everything was like new... the rotors are the easy part.

try anyway, if all the nuts unscrew , you're good to go.
Changing the rotors can be a little difficult you may want someone for support but I can change break pads with my eyes closed, just find a good how to book or site.
Doing brakes is a little more difficult than say painting around the house. Your life as well as others is in jeapordy if done incorrectly. I would suggest not doing brake work if you've never worked on cars before. Try learning oil changes, airing your tires, changing your air filter etc.....I suggest if you have your own parts, find a shop that will install your parts and have them do the work. There wont be a warranty if you furnish the parts but the cost would be around 100 dollars. Either that or find a friend that has done some brake work and pay them.
brakes are not difficult, at least I don't think so anyway, I just buy the parts and they have a repair manual at the auto parts store.

The name of the books you can get for your car is either Chilton, or Hayes, they are specific to your car, or similar models. Example; I have a Mercury Grand Marquis, and the book covers the Ford Crown Victoria which is the same thing.
Brakes are Very important, please only do them if you have a experienced friend, you'll need a friend to help you bleed the lines ( any air in the brake line will compress when you push the brake, instead of applying the pressure to the disk/drum)

    Good Luck
I certainly admire your determination and willingness to do your own brake work, but because you have admittedly never done any auto repairs - I would highly recommend that you don't start with a brake job. Perhaps a water pump or something similar - if you don't do it correctly, it still leaks - no big deal - but brakes? If you do this incorrectly, it could be a very big deal. Perhaps you know someone with a little experience and he or she could assist you? If not - bite the bullet and take it into a service shop.
some tools and a c-clamp you can do it pretty quickly. Be careful it takes special tools to remove some calipers. AutoZone will tell you if you need specialty tools.
youtube and expert village.com offer really good videos to tell you how to do these things . good luck
Although I would love to make some ';smart'; comments about your ';getting dirty'; remark, I'll refrain.

Changing brakepads and maybe rotors by yourself for the first time will be impossible. You will likely not do it right and cause an accident or wind up leaving your car in a condition where it cannot be brought to a mechanic.

What you need to do is have someone there with experience who has done this before.

Some cars have rotors that can be slapped on without even spinning a bolt, some require specialized tools.

You'll need the following for brake pads:

    1. new brakepads

    2. brake fluid - a bottle

    3. a large C-clamp

    4. appropriate drivers - philips head, flat head, sparx, etc

    5. A good pair of pliers.

You will need to remember to collapse the caliper and bleed the brakes. Remember to loosen that nut looking thing on the caliper to allow brake fluid to seep before you colapse it.

Once you have done this a couple of times, this becomes old hat. It becomes easy and a great way to save money.

Best of luck with this, you can do it!

Finally, I'd also like to say that it is very, very sexy when a woman changes her own brakes. Especially if she's wearing blue denim overalls that are a couple of sizes too big and a skin tight white tank top.... so... what are you doing later? hehe
there are alot of little details that go into a good brake job as apposed to one that will shake after few weeks of driving, supporting vehicle safely ,tools and chemicals make the first time expensive after that its not to bad .as an ex mechanis i have all the stuff so it takes me about an hour and 1/2 to do it in the driveway with out air tools, if you do it wrong best case is the car is stuck in your driveway worst is you crash.find someone whos done it and buy them some beer to sit and watch/advise you.its easier to talk them into watching then kneeling on the concrete for a couple of hours
Just as long as you dont mind getting dirty you didnt say what kind of car it is but about the best advice I can give you is go to the parts store where you got your pads and get a repair manual for your car it has step by step instructions with pictures as far as your rotors go you probably wont need them unless they have really deep grooves in them i mean almost through to the other side deep I have seen it happen before where the pads were past the rivits but anyhow 9 times out of 10 you can just have them turned but its not a requirement and while your out you might want to get some hand cleaner your going to need it if you need any help feel free to contact me direct
best solution. go to your local auto zone. and get some advice. you will need a big clamp, maybe about 12 - 16 inches. a Big one. for your brakes. then they will help you with the rotors. you may have to have them turned good idea to do that. auto zone guys will help you. or find a good friend to help you. its about 30 min a side for your brakes you can do it.
EASY JOB. Get the wheels off, and unbolt the brake calipers from the spindle(if the bolts are tough get a can of PB blaster and spray'em up). you'll also wanna pick up a brake pad spreader(to push the pistons back in) then just replace the pads. once you get the calipers off the rotor will come right off, just put the new one on(make sure they're clean!) and slide the caliper w/new pads back over the rotor and bolt it back on. put the wheel back on and you're done!

BE SURE TO CHECK THE FLUID AND PUMP UP THE BRAKES BEFORE YOU TRY TO DRIVE. If they stay soft or spongy, you'll have to bleed them. you'll need help with that.
it is a very easy job to do brake pads and rotors. all u have to do is pull the two slide bolts that hold that caliper on, and use a clamp to push the inside cylinder of the brake caliper in. then just pull of the rotor, put the new rotor on, slap the new pads in, put it back into place, and put the bolts back in. use the manual to verify the parts. it is a very very easy job and a good way to pick up mechanical knowledge.
Some cars require a puller of press to remove the rotors. But if you don't need this, it's easy. Just read a repair manual before you start to make sure you can do all the required work and have the proper tools on hand. It's frustrating to need to drive to the parts store when you've already taken your car apart!
Just chipping in another word of encouragement to try doing it yourself.

The sites listed above will help. This one explains it too.

    http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/howto/a

If you have Anti-Lock Brakes you need to bleed the brakes just a little. If you're not sure if you have them look for an ABS light when you start your car. Bleeding brakes is easy but it really helps to have someone step on the brakes for you, by the way. The other way I've done it myself is to prop a stick between the brake pedal and the driver's seat and scoot the seat up until it depresses the pedal. Then you go out, loosen the valve a little to release the fluid until it doesn't shoot out very much anymore then quickly retighten it so no air gets in. Then scoot the seat back and start over again one more time if you want or do it for the other side.

Also, if you're really looking to save money don't buy the brake cleaner. Maybe it helps but I don't and all the brakes I've done have worked fine.

Consider checking to see if your local parts store can turn (polish/clean up) your rotors instead of buying new ones. It's about $7.50 vs about $40 for new.

Is it easy to replace my own brake pads?

I own a 2006 Scion xA. I am needing to save money on the up-keep of the car. Is it possible to change the brake pads on your own? How difficult is it? Where would I find information and instructions for doing this job specific to my Scion xA?Is it easy to replace my own brake pads?
Myself I'm a master auto tech., but yes you can change them yourself you will need a jack, 2 jack stands, Metric wrench set, 1/2in drive ratchet, and sockets. Once you remove the tire, and see the caliper, you have to spred open the caliper by hand. You can do this by inserting a flat tiped screwdriver into the opening of the cal.between the back brake pad and the rotor now pry it open until it stops. Do this on both sides. when you are finished the job befor you start the car depress the brake pedel several times until the pedel is normal again. Hope this helps you out.Is it easy to replace my own brake pads?
There would be many forums that could give you instructions on doing this. It's not really a hard job, but it will take a little while and may be confusing if you've never done a brake job before.
If you select the proper metric tools: (1/2 shallow well sockets and a 12' and 16'; ratchet, heavy dead blow hammer, never seize, 4 1/2 right angle grinder and coarse zerconia flap wheels.) No cheap Chinease tools for this job. It will eat em' alive. S%26amp;K or Craftsman is a good choice. You must be familiar with all the hydraulics and mechanical slider pins the job is ';duck soup.'; You'll need a floor jack and jack stands also.

It's best to purchase a Haynes Repair manual for your car. You can order them from any NAPA or Carquest automotive store. You may chose to go to a local library and sign out a Motors, Haynes or Chiltons big book and soak in detailed information and pictures or your particular braking system. Toyota's have outstanding brake pads that should last 60,000 + miles. It's important to replace the brake pad shim kits also.

Changing Brake Pads and Discs on 2004 Peugeot 307 S model. HELP!?

I have always wanted to change the discs and pads on my peugeot because they are now at the stage where they are worn and need replaced. I normally take it to the garage but the cheapest quote that i can get for changing them is £400 supplied and fitted where as i can get the parts for only £120. I can normally do this kind of stuff without much hassle but i like to backup of instructions incase it goes wrong. Are there any mechanics out there who can give me step by step on how to do this or point me in the direction of a rescource which can help me. How easy would you say it was 10 being hardest 1 the easiest, All help much appreciated.Changing Brake Pads and Discs on 2004 Peugeot 307 S model. HELP!?
    1. Jack up the car, use an additional stand and remove the wheel.

    2. Push (with the help of a large screwdriver as a pivot arm) the piston as far as possible back in the caliper.

    3. Remove the bottom M6x20mm bolt, which is holding the caliper fixed to the slider pin.

    4. Open the caliper by turning it along the upper slider pen. Take out the pads, clean the contact point and put the new pads in. Apply copper grease to the lugs and back of the pads to prevent brake squeal.

    5. Remove the upper M8x20mm bolt and gently put the caliper in a free hanging position from the brake hose.

    6. Remove the M10x20mm bolts fixing the anchor-brace to the upright.

    7. Remove the two M6-Torx30 bolts, which fix the disk to the hub.

    8. After a couple of years of bonding the disk needs some convincing to give up its attachment with the hub. Use a plastic (not rubber or steel) hammer to knock it loose with some well aimed hits.

    9. Before fitting the new disk, clean the face of the hub with a steel brush and apply a little (!) copper grease, to prevent things sticking in the future.

    10. Put everything together in reverse order (apply a bit of “Lock-tite” to the M10 and M8 bolts and get the correct torques from your handbook:

The M10x20 mm bolts with **Nm (or as tight as possible with a hand tool)

The M8x20 bolts with **Nm (or hand tight plus 30 degrees)

The M6 Torx bolts hand tight

Not sure how much help I've been but re-message if you need further help. Just be careul not to lose anything and put everything on in the reverse order. Important too that you loosen the wheel nuts first by half a turn before jacking up, use axle stands or similar and even take photos if you can so you can see where evrytthingf goes back - works for a few people I know!

And, as said, buy a Haynes Manual too, they're invaluable, they'll give you the correct torques and everything.Changing Brake Pads and Discs on 2004 Peugeot 307 S model. HELP!?
Done the discs and pads on a 206 GLX. which is similar.

On a scale of 1-easiest to 10-hardest,I would rate the job at a 5-6,but I had quite a few snags on the way.

Can anyone give me simple step by step instructions on how to do this please.Changing brake pads on a Mondeo 2ltr Zetec?
What year please? to get the right web page pictures if possible. Or you could consider buying a Haynes Manual from Halfords with step by step instructions.

I only ask because I recently changed the pads on my Rover and I only had to undo two bolts on each set.

The trouble comes when you have to compress the brake pistons so that the callipers fit over the new thicker pads.

You need a lot of leverage. My Rover uses a sliding calliper so only one piston is adjusted on each side. Some cars have four pistons on each calliper... you need four g-cramps/c-cramps and you need to open the top of the brake fluid reservoir and cover it to avoid getting muck into it.

It might be worth the 拢20 that a local mechanic will charge to do it for you. Just buy the pads from a local motor factors (or Halfords) and take them to the mechanic to fit.Changing brake pads on a Mondeo 2ltr Zetec?

I could tell you but it would take far to tell you than it takes to do it!

How to change the brake pads on a zx6r kawasaki 1999 (front and rear)?

is it a easy job to do?How to change the brake pads on a zx6r kawasaki 1999 (front and rear)?
    It takes about 15 minutes.

In the front (on each brake) there are 2 pad spring bolts. You remove them and the pad spring, then pull out the clip and remove the pad pin.

When you put the new pads in, you need to push the caliper pistons in by hand as far as you can, install the new pads and replace the pad pin, clip, pad spring and bolts. Make sure the clip is to the outside of the pad.

The back brakes you must remove the caliper by unscrewing the mounting bolts. Take the caliper off the disc, remove the clip and pad pin, then take out the old pads.

To install new pads, push the piston in and reverse the above procedure.

You should get a service manual as the illustrations are just as helpful as the text. You can probably find a used one on ebay or at http://www.alibris.com or http://www.biblio.com for cheap. How to change the brake pads on a zx6r kawasaki 1999 (front and rear)?
it's easy....all u need is the service manual and the right tools. it'll walk u thru it step by step. is cheaper to get the manual than to pay for the shop time.
Yes it is an easy job if you have the skills and tool to do it

    BUT

As you have to ask how on here and this is your brakes we are talking about I doubt if you do possess the necessary skills and tools to do this and I mean no offence but safety is paramount.

Local bike shop would not charge a fortune to do this and you would be happy in the knowledge that it was done properly.

You need to put safety up there at the top and keep safe

    Good luck
Remove the 2 bolts holding each caliper on. Push in on the old pads to move the pistons all the way in. DO NOT PULL THE BRAKE LEVERS WHILE CALIPERS ARE OFF! Remove the 2 screws that hold the anti-vibe springs on top of the calipers. Pull the cotter pin on the pin that runs through the top of the pads. Pads should fall out. Install new pads and all components in reverse steps. Install calipers...do not touch rotors or pads with your fingers...oil from fingers causes squealing brakes. Pump levers to seat pads to rotors and check fluid levels. Good Luck!

this is easy to do if you have even the slightest mechanical capability. jack the car up, remove wheel, prop car on axle stands for safety.remove dust cover(rubber), on the rear of the caliper, there are two, one above the other. undo the bolts which are under the covers, usually allen or torx bolts. force the pistons back into the caliper by positioning a flat bladed screwdriver between the pad and the disc and levering sideways.then slide the spring retaining clip out, remove pads and insert new ones. if too tight, remove bolts you previously loosened and pull caliper off wheel.using large grips, squeeze pistons fully back into caliper and replace on wheel. pads should now fit. replace pins, springs and bolts in reverse order of removal.if this sounds too much for you, then for safety take car to a reputable garage. How do i change my brake pads is this easy any one got any web links on how to do this?
Why not just go to your local car accessory shop and get a workshop manual (Haynes are the best) which will give you easy step-by-step instructions with pictures.
The library is good place to look too.
Cars vary, buy a haynes manual for your car from a car accessory shop.

Leave this job to the experts and it will save your life and others.

By the time you have bought a ';Haynes'; manual and a set of brake pads you could have had the job done by a local mechanic and be safe.

If you have to ask this question you should not be even thinking of doing the job in the first place !

    Indeed63 has endorsed this view.

No mention of removing the brake master cylinder cap to stop corrosive brake fluid spraying out when you push the pistons back and no mention of ';pumping up the pedal'; when the job is finished to stop you driving off with no brakes at all !!

and ';bedding'; the brakes in gently until you get some ';bite'; from them.

How come I can change the front brake pads but not the rear on my car?

Is there i different method that is applied to the rear brakes? How come I can change the front brake pads but not the rear on my car?
Alot of rear caliper pistons need to be ';turned'; and ';pushed'; in. This can be a very tricky ordeal. Alot of the time they will just turn and turn and turn. How come I can change the front brake pads but not the rear on my car?
the rear brakes are also the parking brake. Sometimes the caliper piston will have slot on the end of it for a tool to turn the piston as it is pressed in. Buy a repair manual for the car that will tell you the proper procedure for compressing the caliper piston. You may need a specialty tool to engage the slots and turn the piston while compressing it. I hope this helps

go to the advance auto parts website they have videos that will shoe you howHow do I change the front brake pads on a Nissan Micra?
do not use copper grease on your caliper or sliders this contains copper filings and can cause your sliders to stick (old mechanics swear by this stuff). use mintex stuff called cera tec
lol undo the 2 allen key bolts on the back of the caliper and slide the caliper off take out the one old pad and use a G clamp 2 wind against the old pad 2 push the piston bk lol then ya can remove it and fit the new pads remember use Copper grease on the backs of the pads and grease the 2 allen key bolts (sliders) bosh it bk 2 gether nd do em up real tight
you can come to dealer nissan near your city
ummm...we dont have that car in america
Undo the bolts - slide the caliper away and remove the pads - you will need to loosen the cap on the brake fluid cylinder and push the brake pistons back into the housing to allow you to get the new pads in - use a BLUNT screwdriver or a good solid piece of wood.

scroll to the bottom of the same page and you'll see a link to Part 2.
I personally think brakes are important enough that owners should not DIY unless they watch it done properly a couple times first. New brake pads may not take the shape of worn rotor surfaces then they squeel and make noise. A proper brake job includes replacing the friction parts resurfacing the rotors and drums then ';bedding in'; where the brake pads are brought up to temp repeted hard stops. Then allowed to cool down. Many times it is best to have a brake fluid change preformed before pushing the caliper pistons inward driving dirty fluid back to the antilock brake pump and master CYL. Also Nissan Key Value pads installed at the dealer come with a one year warranty. Good Luck

How much it would cost me to have my brake lines fixed?

I change my brakes on my Nissan maxima 1993 and now my brake pedal are so soft and Im aware that its now dangerous to drive. This is my first time that happens to me. I have change brake pads so many times but this one really gave me problem. If theres air inside my lines then What can I do. If this is a big kind of job how much would it cost me. Thanx for all your answers and God Bless. How much it would cost me to have my brake lines fixed?
If you can change your brake pads you can bleed your own brakes.

You'll need a helper. Have the helper pump the pedal two or three times and hold pressure on the pedal while you break open the bleeder screw on the caliper. Air and brake fluid will squirt out. The pedal will go to the floor. Tell your helper to hold pressure on the pedal until you close the bleeder. Repeat this procedure until you see just brake fluid squirt out and no air. Do the same thing for the other caliper. Add enough brake fluid to the master cylinder to top it back off when you are done.

You should bleed the brakes in the following sequence...right rear, left rear, right front, left front. (right being passenger side and left being driver side)How much it would cost me to have my brake lines fixed?
Hello,,sounds like air in the lines for sure,,it ain't real hard,,just takes a couple minutes, but you'll need a smart friend to help you,,make sure you have enough brake fluid on hand in case things get out of control, haha, only problem is usually the bleeder screws are to tight to loosen and someone breaks it off,,that sucks,,or they turn it the wrong way and break it off,,so maybe saving some money means paying someone to fix you foul-ups. Find someone with the skills and the time to be able to fix anything,, you might learn the hard way to do yourself.
    sounds like air in line.

have ya never bleed the lines after re-doing brakes b4 ?

bleeding the lines isnt a big or hard job. no special tools required.(one wrench or eeekks vise grips)

may need a helper to pump and hold brake pedel while you turn the bleeder screw on the caliper tho.

How to change rear brake pads and drums?

if you have not yet done so, investing in a haynes or clinton's manual for your specific car is a great investment. most auto parts stores carry them or you can search the internet under chiltons or haynes repair manual and the make/model of your car.

for drum brakes, chuck front wheels, loosen lug nuts both side, and jack up car. remove wheel.

the drum will have 2 machine screws holding the drum in place, remove them.

the drum should come off with a little tapping. make sure e brake is off.

you will see two shoes connected by springs and the brake cylinders. also the ebrake arrangement will be apparent.

see why the manual is handy now?

using screwdriver and pliers, dislodge the brake shoes from the cylinder to relief spring tension.

unhook the springs and remove shoes.

depending on the age of the vehicle, it may be a good time to consider replacing the cylinders.

replacement is the opposite of the above.

if the system is disc, same as above for removing the wheel.

the disc calipher will be held on to the car by a couple of bolts. remove to free calipher.

the pads can now be removed.

be sure to have either the drums or the disc resurfaced prior to re-assembly.

it is relatively easy to change either, doable for a shade tree mechanic with a manual.

many autoparts stores offer free turning with purchase of pads or shoes. buy quality pads or shoes. keep everything clean. use brake cleaner before installing brake components.

depending on manufacturer of pads/shoes there will be a short break in period. How to change rear brake pads and drums?
you need to be more clear on your question. If you have brake pads then you don't have drums you have rotors. I you have drum brakes the you have brake shoes. need to say which one it is because pads are easier then shoes

I did my Sprinter pads not very long ago, if they're anything like them - It is a Doddle!

Loosen wheel nuts, Jack up and axle stand. Wheel off.

Using a pry bar (sturdy screw driver) gently ease the pistons of the calliper back. Do not damage the disk doing this.

There are Allen bolts top and bottom of the calliper, slacken one, remove the other, swing out the calliper. Change pads, replace calliper and put in the bolt, tighten them both up. Wheel on, do other side.

Pump the pedal a few times before you move the vehicle.

I think the Allen heads are 7mm, it's not the usual size that is in a set. I had to get one special from Hal Fred's

1.) Buy a Chilton manual. If for nothing else you'll be happy to have the pictures.

2.) Know what you're dealing with. I've yet to meet a person who liked messing with rear drum brakes, however recent experience tells me that rear disc brakes have quirks all their own. If it's a rear drum brake make sure you have someone around to help you, even with them you'll probably still wish you had an extra hand or two.

3.) The cheap drip pans you can get are a great thing, after you get the car SAFELY on jack stands position it under the brake so that it catches all the parts as you remove them.

4.) Make sure to get the Brake Quiet compound or squeeks will drive you nuts.

5.) Have the drums or rotor's checked with a micrometer to make sure they're good to still use. If you can get them turned if not buy new ones.

6.) Front disc brakes you'll need just a C-clamp and maybe a small piece of wood. Rear disc brakes you may need a special spanner tool to turn the brake pistons back in.

7.) When in doubt get help. Your life depends on them, don't risk it. It will help to have someone around who has done it before

Hope I didn't run you off. For the most part you should be able to change brakes with a C-clamp, a 3/8'; drive ratchet set, maybe one or two inexpensive specialized tools, and a rubber mallet. Just take your time and follow the directions. Once you do it the first time they're all about the same.
If you asked this question, you probably should not be attempting a brake job on your own.

Seek the assistance of someone qualified to help you, and watch and learn.

Brakes are a seerious subject, and by no means should someone who does not know what they are doing attempt to replace brakes.
heres the simple answer. get a chiltons manual and remember, both sides are the same. jack up either the front or rear or both of your car and remove the driver and passenger side tires. when changing the brakes only do one side at a time so the other side is a reference for you.

Take a screw driver and wedge it between the rotor and brake pad and compress the piston in as he can so he can get the new brakes in as well.

Can you tell me how to change the brake pads on my '05 Honda Element?

Either get a service manual (like a Haynes or Chilton manual from an Auto Parts store) and follow the step by step instructions or take it to a reputable shop or the Honda dealer and pay to get the brake pads changed by a professional who knows what they're doing.

The worst system to figure-it-out and do-it-yourself on with no idea what you're doing is the brakes. If you make a dumb mistake and screw up the brakes because you didn't know exactly what you were doing you could kill yourself or others. Can you tell me how to change the brake pads on my '05 Honda Element?
Front or rear? I would definately suggest getting a manual if you are asking how to do it.

With that said, most disc brakes are similar, there is a disc squeezed by a caliper. The pads are held in the caliper and the caliper mounts to the hub via a carrier. There should be two bolts that hold the caliper to it's carrier. On some cars you can just remove one bolt and the caliper will swing away from the disc and you can remove the old pads and install the new ones. There will probably be springs in there with the pads, so before you remove the old pads, make a note or take a few pictures of how the pads and springs fit in the caliper. You may also want to use a special lubricant between the caliper and pad to help quiet sqeeking and sqealing.

-open the hood and open the cover for the brake fluid resevior

-jack up the car and put wheel chocks behind the other tires

    -remove the wheel

-remove one or both of the caliper bolts

-separate the caliper from the disc

    -take picture of cliper set-up

    -remove old pads and springs

-use wood block and c-clamp to push caliper piston back into caliper (make note not to push so much that brake fuid comes back out the resevior)

    -install new pads/spring/pad lubricant

    -reinstall caliper on carrier

-reinstall bolt(s) and tighten to factory specs.

    -reinstall wheel

Cost of changing brake pads on VW?

How much would it cost if i just wanted to change my brake pads on my VW Jetta, 2008. I will buy the brakes separately, so i want to know price of installing them. anyone have an estimate??

    thanks!

(full points for best answer...)Cost of changing brake pads on VW?
The cost will vary depending upon the hourly charge for labour; shop rates vary from shop to shop.. it will also depend upon what you need to have done.

To replace brake pads only, you should expect to pay between .5 to .8 of an hour charge x times the posted hourly rate for labour. It is also quite possible that you may need additional work; the rotors might need to be machined or even replaced, depending upon the amount of runout on the rotor (yeah, its possible that you might not need to do anything but replace pads, but given the material OEM brake pads are made up, that's unlikely). If you need to machine the rotors (or replace the rotors), expect to pay at least 1.0 hours of labour for replacement, up to 1.8 to machine rotors, in addition to the basic charge of of replacing the pads.

Brakes are something that you don't economize at: a quality brake job is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Your safety is something you don't want to gamble at, inferior brake pads, poor workmanship, will effect the braking distance and wear characteristics of the brake job. On my own every day driver, (also a front wheel drive compact car), I don't even machine rotors, I replace them because they will almost always be at or below minimum safe thickness after machining. And, dare I say, a good brake job will include new mounting hardware, anti-rattle clips (if your car is equipped), cleaning and lubrication of the caliper sliding pionts, etc... I've seen too many ';cheap'; brake jobs where the customer wasn't happy with they got: noisy brakes, ';grabbing'; brakes, brakes that wore unevenly or wore out very quickly and steering that pulled from one side to the other when braking. I've redone countless ';cheap'; brakes over the last 30+ years; I'm amazed at the poor quality of workmanship and/or materials that exist in automotive service market place.

There are places that you can economize on your vehicle; a brake job isn't one of them. I have a cardinal rule: if it rolls (drives) on the street, several things have to be in top shape, no matter what the car looks like: it has to steer, (means good tires, alignment, steering linkage), it has to brake (brakes that don't fade under hard usage, stop straight and don't pull, stop in the shortest distance possible and still be stable), and you have to be able to see: clear windscreen (windshield), mirrors that work, lights that work and are aimed correctly, defroster(s) that work etc.

As a practical matter, I agree with the previous writer that you don't go to a shop to have them install your supplied parts. The shop that installs your supplied part won't be responsible for the failure or wear on your part (as long as it can be proved that the installation was done correctly), so you could end up paying for labour twice...

Should you still decide to purchase the part yourself; don't buy the cheapest brake pad you can find. You need to purchase at least an OEM grade of brake pad; brake pads are frequently sold in grades, the more expensive the brake pad, usually the better the material that the pad is made up. Also, in some brake pads, they include the mounting hardware with the pads as well as a anti vibration/noise shim, usually glued on the back side of the pad. For the most part, better quality pads are the only ones that include the hardware with the brake pad.

I know that some people might say I'm just ranting, not at all, I just want to you to understand that there's more to a quality brake job than just replacing the brake pad. A good job will save you money, time and perhaps, personal injury.

Hope this helps, a car nut.Cost of changing brake pads on VW?
Depends on where your at, but $75.00 to $95.00. Just one question for you though, when you go to a restaurant do you take food in and have the chef cook it for you so you do not have to pay full price? Shop owners have overhead that the profit they make on parts helps cover.

How much should it cost for me to get my brake pads changed and turn the rotars just in the front of my car?

I have a 2007 ion and they are saying $199. I feel like that is a little pricey? How much should it cost for me to get my brake pads changed and turn the rotars just in the front of my car?
Sounds about right. Just the parts are half of that. How much should it cost for me to get my brake pads changed and turn the rotars just in the front of my car?
    i agree with you.
$199 sounds high, but the parts are high for that particular vehicle. You can always buy the parts yourself and take the rotors to have them machined, but you will inevitably blow an entire afternoon in the process. Is your time worth the extra money?
    Pads run like $25 to $75+.You will be charged for machining 2 surfaces per rotor on the 1 rotor.Take the car to a mechanic that you trust.Get all estimates in writing and get estimates before you get repairs done.Always watch out for ';to good to be true deals';
I would not be uncomfortable paying 150 $ for one axel on a vehicle. there is a comfort zone for the mechanic to make a few bucks and give you a good job . just find a good mechanic to do it.

Single-piston calipers of various sizes were used from 1997-99. For the 2000 model year a twin-piston caliper was used.

    1. Clean the area around the master cylinder reservoir and filler cap(s).

    2. Remove the filler cap(s) and siphon off about 25 percent of the fluid. This is to prevent overflow as the piston is pushed into the caliper. Fitting new pads will cause a rise in the fluid level.

    3. Raise and support the vehicle.

    4. Remove the wheel.

    5. Pry the piston side pad away from the rotor with a tool which won't scratch the rotor surface.

    6. Remove the caliper mounting bolts.

    7. Remove the caliper and brake pads from the rotor. Use a plastic mallet to tap it free, if necessary.

    8. Pry out the outboard brake pad.

    9. Remove the inboard shoe by tilting the pad outward until the retainer spring is clear of the caliper piston.

    10. Remove the anti-rattle springs, if fitted (2000 models).

    NOTE

The anti-rattle springs are not interchangeable.

    11. Support the caliper with a wire or twine: Do NOT allow it to hang by the hose.

    NOTE

Do NOT apply the brake pedal with the caliper off the rotor. Use a soft wedge (such as a piece of wood) to hold the pads apart if the caliper is to be off the rotor for any length of time.

    To install:

    12. Clean the caliper and steering knuckle slide surfaces with a wire brush. Then lubricate the surfaces with a thin coat of high temperature grease.

    13. On 1997-99 Rams, lubricate the caliper mounting bolts, collars, bushings and bores with silicone grease.

    14. Lubricate and install the anti-rattle springs (2000 models).

    15. Install the inboard shoe. Be sure the retainer spring is firmly seated in the caliper piston.

    16. Insert the outboard shoe in the caliper.

    17. Degrease the rotor with a safe solvent.

    18. Push the piston(s) in far enough to allow the pads to clear the rotor. This can be done by hand or with a special tool: several types are available.

    19. Install the caliper and rotor assembly. Be sure the caliper is seated flush on the mounting arm surfaces.

    20. Start the mounting bolts by hand to prevent crossthreading. Tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm) on 1997-99 models, or to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm) on 2000 models.

    21. Install the wheel.

    22. Apply the brake several times to seat the pads.

    23. Check the brake fluid level at the master cylinder reservoir and add if necessary. How do i change the front brake pads on 2000 dodge 2500 truck?

How much would a shop charge to change all 4 brake pads on my 350z?Changing brake pads?
Depending on the shop I'd say at minimum $200 if it's just to change them, if there is more work to be done, say turning the rotors then maybe a couple hundred more bucksChanging brake pads?
There's no way to answer that until the brakes are inspected. Be aware that brake shops want to change every part in sight and they will be sure to tell you how 'unsafe' your brakes are in their present condition. Many visits will cost around $400.

Look carefully at what parts and work they want to do and don't go for all their sales points.
    There are 8 pads.

Check on Nissan Z forums and see if there's someone that will help you do it yourself. It's not that hard.

there are two answers really if you need rotors which is typical on non-brembo models it could cost $200.00 per axle plus additional fees for the rotors on the front only which tend to lip out and become to risky to machine.. although brembo models have better design and should be able to machine rotors..
