How do i change the rear brake pads on my 01 mustang?

I have the original pads off and I squeezed the new pads in but I cant get the pistion back in. Is there a certian way to put mustang pads in or no? is the piston supose to be that hard to push back in? I have used a c clamp but its not working. How do i change the rear brake pads on my 01 mustang?
The system uses the parking brake, The system is called an ' Integrated parking brake system ' and requires a special tool to turn the piston as it is pushed in.How do i change the rear brake pads on my 01 mustang?
YOU NEED A BRAKE CALIPER TOOL. THIS TOOL IS USE TO TURN THE BRAKE CALIPER PISTONS BACK INTO THE BRAKE CALIPERS. BEFORE TURNING THE BRAKE PISTONS, YOU NEED TO LOOSEN THE BRAKE BLEED SCREW ON THE CALIPER. THIS WILL PREVENT THE BRAKE FLUID FROM PUSHING AGAINST THE ABS PUMP OR MASTERCYLINDER WHILE TURNING THE BRAKE PISTONS BACK IN. AFTER YOU TURN THE BRAKE CALIPER PISTONS BACK IN, CLOSE THE BLEEDER SCREW. LUBRICATE THE BRAKE PAD ENDS AND BRAKE CALIPER SLIDING PINS TO PREVENT THE BRAKE PADS FROM RUBBING AGAINST THE BRAKE ROTORS ALL THE TIME.PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL A FEW TIMES UNTIL IT GET HARD AND THE PEDAL IS ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP. CHANGE THE BRAKE FLUID IF IT IS NOT CLEAR TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO OTHER BRAKE PARTS. TORQUE THE LUG NUTS TO 90 FT. LB. (BEFORE AND AFTER A 5 MILES TEST DRIVE. DO NOT MAKE ANY PANIC STOP OR APPLY HARD BRAKE. THIS WILL OVER HEAT THE BRAKE PADS AND REDUCE THE BRAKE FRICTION AND NOISE

EZ to read. lots of pix.

There is a reason they have been around since 1922.
You dont use a c clamp, you have to twist the piston back in with a rear caliper tool.

Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?

and just came off how does the rotar go back on without being loose or is it ok just to put back onChanging brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
This is normal, when you reinstall the pad's just push it back into place

install the pad's the wheel,AKA the rim is what holds the rotor's in place when you tighten the lug nut's. Good luck.Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
Put it back on just like you took it off. Tip when you go to put the new shoes on you will need a C clamp to help you push the piston in make sure that the piston goes as far as it can go. Then put back on rotor tighten the two bolts. then do the same to the other side. when don check your break fluid. top off if needed.
The rotor is held on by the wheel when it is put back on and the combination of the brake pads and caliper. your ok no problems that i see.

have fun and tighten everything and use antiseize on all sliders.
the rotor in some cars is held on by two little screws on others its held in place by the tire rim and bolts

no worrys just slap it on there but wait did you get them resurfaced you should since you replaced the pads..
I think on those cars the lug nuts hold everything together everything should be fine
It's supposed to be loose.. The caliper and pads hold it tight along with your wheel being pressed against it.
your caliper holds the rotor on, on some cars, best thing to do is look in the maintenance manual hope that helps,

If i do it myself it takes around 1-2 hrs. This goes for my european cars. Never changed on the Chrysler or Dodge.

    Pads? Well only in front?

Prices are what we have here in Sweden but i suppose its similar, never know...

    Well, pads say $20

    Work? 2 hrs at $40 gives $80

Lets say max $100 in total, should be less? Give me feedback if anyone know! Interesting! How much does it cost to change the brake pads of the car?
cost of pads+ cost of labor if ur not gonna do the work ureself....How much does it cost to change the brake pads of the car?
I paid 148.00 for brake pads on a Chevy S-10 1998 truck. Which they forgot to put on when they did my brake job! That was not at the dealer either.
    Hello,

it depends on which pads, front or rear, what make of vehicle and are you going to DIY or taking to a garage. The average cost of fitting front pads to a popular car, Fiesta, would be about 拢25 plus the cost of the pads. Some places have a price list, mostly tyre and exhaust stations, Quick-fit and the like. Pads can cost the earth if you buy from car manufacturers but will cost less if you go non genuine. Hope that helps.

    Regards Chris.

How do you change the front brake pads on a suzuki scooter?

Its a 1996 AP50, The bit I'm confused about is the brake-fluid, do you have to release it first, if so how?How do you change the front brake pads on a suzuki scooter?
Remove caliper/with a toothbrush and some brake cleaner solution clean the pistons before returning them into the caliper bores.

    Leaving the old pads installed...

Use a flat blade screwdriver between old pads and gently push/pry the pistons back to give clearance for the new pads to fit over the caliper. Leaving the old pads in and pushing against them assures you dont damage anything and gives a solid surface to return the pistons back to the resting position.

The brake fluid will be forced back into the master cylinder/ be sure it does not become overfull.(remove it's cover)

Now remove the lock clip and pin or pins that support the old pads and remove them.

Look to see the pistons are both returned completely into their cylinders in the caliper body.

If need be slip the old pads back into the caliper and pry some more gently returning pistonsfor proper clearance. Clean well all surfaces and buff or wire wheel the pins of all dirt and rust/shine them up!

If anything seems wrong ie siezed rusty pistons/ replace! If pistons are siezed take the calipers to a shop for rebuilding or ask more questions here!

Install pads with fibre facing rotor/metal side facing piston.

Install caliper and pump brake to bring pad into contact with rotor and spin wheel to see if all is free and not binding.

Check brake fluid and adjust as necessary replsce cap and ride on/ if you have not allowed air into the system you should not have to bleed it!

It's not rocket science and you should be able to do this yourself if you have some metric tools.

Flush and replace brake fluid every two years!

Suck it out the master cyl reservoir and bleed it out the caliper. How do you change the front brake pads on a suzuki scooter?
The braking system on a bike or car should NEVER be touched by person who doesnt know exactly what they are doing !! Please take your scoot to a motorcycle shop to have the pads fitted. Its allot cheaper to pay a mechanic to fit your pads than to do it yourself potentialy kill yourself due to brake failure.

How much is it to get brake pads changed?

    300-600 depending on your vehicle.

Its a small price to pay to help avoid an accident. How much is it to get brake pads changed?
it depends, brake pads are usually cheap and labor is probably worth the same if not much...its cheap just go do itHow much is it to get brake pads changed?
Most places charge around 100 per axle. I recommend you ask a friend or family member. Pads cost around 25.00 a pair and they are easy to install.
OK,well you don't say the type of vehicle, but a garage will charge a lot more than a local guy who does side jobs.ask around to find someone like that.you will save a lot.i work on cars all the time on the side and i usually charge about 50 dollars.
About $100 per axle. Call around for free quotes. May depend on if rotors need to be turned or maybe even replaced, if damaged.
    150.00 for labor,hes nuts,my shop is 89.95,that includes machining the rotors,and hardware.
$150 is fair for labor and costs. Brake pads costs $25-35 and to turn the rotors another $20. So he is making less than $100 on the labor which is very dirty. If you go somewhere else, you will probably pay $200-250 but you will also have a warranty so weigh your options.
If you can change them or have a reliable friend, the pads are fairly cheap. (mine were 20 something for front)

Having them done by a professional, they won't change just the pads and all the rest adds up: turning drums/rotors, replacing bleeders, or whatever.

My brother just paid over $400 for his front brakes.
NOOO. That is not a good deal at all. Depending on where you live there is a place called Brake Team and they will do all your brakes for 100 bucks thats front and rear. For anyone that knows how to work on cars this is a 20 min job max. So 150 is outrageous.
That is way to much for an driveway mechanic to charge. I would pay him no more than $50-$75
iff pads only then 1 hr tops whole car. if machining req'd a lot more, pads std abt $25-30 NOT oem, competition grade a bit more, usually. You can buy a workshop manual and the tools to DIY for less than he's demanding. I'd consider him less than honest person, and be careful of him in all things from here on.
Around 75.00 to 125.00 an axle with brake pads included. Around 50 each to cut the rotors or drums, you would still have to pay for even if your friend does the work. If you need spring kit that will be another 20.00 dollars or so. No, that is to much to pay a friend or neighbor to do. On the street the going rate it about 50.00 an axle, but if he is a good friend he would do it for free. The brakes would be installed for about 200.00 to 300.00 at the local shop with the warranty. (FRIEND OR NEIGHBOR IT SHOULD BE FREE)
well sounds like he is also buying the beer for you guys tonight, yea that is a little much for a hour tops of labor.$50 to $75 is what i charge.and if you have to change the rotors he should not charge you anymore then $100 is the top.still is a little high tho.
midas charges about $160 for all 4 wheels and that includes the parts and labor as long as you don't need new rotors or rear brake drums.

How do i change my brake pads on a ford ka. 2000 (v) reg.?

Do i need any special tools, or do i have to be careful in certain fields as this is my first time doing it myself. Instructions seem complicated and want to make sure i do it right. How do i change my brake pads on a ford ka. 2000 (v) reg.?
    you don't need special tools.

tool list= 5mm spanner for nipples and some hose to bleed the brakes after you have changed the pads.

Remember you need to put new brake fluid in and bleed the system so their is no AIR in the system.

You do this by unscrwing the nipple with one or two turns, pressing the brake peddle, holding the brake peddle down in the depressed position whilst you tighten the nipple. don't let the brake peddle up whilst the nipple is open or you will just let AIR back in . and just keep repeating the proccess till all the AIR is out whilst topping up the brake fluid reserve. How do i change my brake pads on a ford ka. 2000 (v) reg.?
You do need some special tools, for example an allen key for the caliper retaining bolts and some way of pushing the hydraulic piston back. Most probably cheaper just to get them fitted at a local garage as its not a big job.Hope this helps
take it to your local garage, that should do the trick!!
Changing pads is fairly straightforward. Cant remember if its an allen key or bolt that holds caliper on the ka.

Remove caliper, remove old pads. push back caliper piston using a g clamp. Clean up retaining clips at top and bottom of carrier. Grease these with some copper grease. Stick new pads in. Grease back of pads with copper grease. Reasemble caliper and wheel back on.

Give brake peddle a few pumps until you feel it going hard.

    Bobs your mums sister!
easy as pie...NO BLEADING/SPECIAL TOOLS NEDED..loosen wheel nuts, jack up,off with the wheel, big screwdriver to push back pistons,12mm or allen bolt to remove caliper/pad holding bracket, out with the old in with the new....all back together..BUT DONT FORGET TO PUMP THE BRAKES ALITTLE BE FOR U USE IT..
    easy

    step 1 take wheels off

step 2 make sure stearing lock is not on and put it on full lock

eg: if you want to do drivers side first full right lock and if you want to do passenger side first left lock

step3 you either hae a pin going through te the lower part of the caliper or a couple of 13 mill bolts or you could have a 7 mm allen key on the back take the lower thirteen mill bolt out or the pin depending on what you have got

step 3 get a screwdriver between the caliper and the carrier and lever the caliper up if it is to tight you maid have to slacken the top bolt of a bit

step 4 take out both brake pads you maid have to get the screwdriver in there and have to wiggle it about

step 5 clean the bit of the carrier where the brake pads have been standing on clean it with wire brush

step 6 get a big pair of players and push the caliper back by squeezing the piston (the bit where the brake pad was sitting on) back in

step 7 if you want to prevent a squeeki niose get some copper slip and put some on the brake pad BUT ONLY ON THE BIT WHICH IS IN CONTACT WITH THE CARRIER YOU DONT WANT TO GET ANY ON THE BRAKE PAD FACE AS THIS COULDEFFECT YOUR BRAKING

step 8 place brake pads on carrier make sure they are tight against the disc

    step 9 pull caliper down

step10 put bolt back in or put pin back through the hole make sure to tighten up the top bolt if you have slakend it of

step11 put wheels back on torque them up to 100nm if you have torque wrench otherwise just make sure they are tight

step12 before you start the car pump up the brake peddal about 5times untill it is nice and hard otherwise you will not have any brakes

step 13 take it for a spin dont forget your brakes will not be as good as they used to be for the first 100-200 miles as they have to bleed them selves in

    thats it job done

Oh yeah you will get a bit of a funny smell nothing to worry about only means your brakes are bleeding in should go away after a few days
IF YOU NEED TO GO ON YAHOO TO FIND OUT HOW TO REPLACE YOUR BRAKES YOU SHOULD NOT BE WORKING ON YOUR CAR. LEAVE IT TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINED TO DO THE JOB

ITS NOT ONLY YOUR LIFE YOU ARE PUTTING AT RISK
if you can read and understand what you read, i would suggest you go to a auto parts store and purchase a Haynes auto manual for your year and make vehicle, also has pictures. a c-clap , Allen wrenches, hammer, punch, i don't believe you will need any specialty tools.for safety sake a good jack, jack stands, and chock your tires that are on the ground front and rear, the manual should pretty much run you through it...
no just take it to a car shop they were have some good pads
wow i didn't know that they fitted brakes to them i thought that they were just a pedle car that you got in a toy shop or that they went that fast to need brakes
If I was you, for the sake of an extra ten or twenty pound I'd take it to a garage. I've changed all sorts on my car - lights, wing mirrors, wind screen wipers etc but I wont mess with breaks because its too much of a risk. Your life is more important than saving. I'm not saying your not capable but I think its too much of a risk.

  • Is there a place online where i can learn step by step how to put on brake pads?

I no longer have my dad around ( he always worked on my car) n now i need my brake pads changed..instead of charging someone to do it id like to do it myself although ive never woeked on my car..does anyone have any ideas on where i can learn online? Is there a place online where i can learn step by step how to put on brake pads?
Yes, the Chilton or Hayes would have what you need, but be very cautious!! Brakes are fairly easy to fix for those in the know, but you could jeapordize your safety or someone else's with just one little mistake.

I suggest to let the expert do this one.

SorryIs there a place online where i can learn step by step how to put on brake pads?
Good on ya! Glad to see you want to do something yourself.

Best bet- find a Chilton's or Hayne's manual for your car. It'll have a section on replacing the brake pads with step-by-step instructions that you can have right next to the car. And if you drop a wrench on the book, you won't be out $1500 for a new laptop.

The net is great, I wouldn't want to be without my computer. but sometimes a real printed book is better. Hey- use the net to find your manual.

Hope you have access to your dad's tools.
    Google it
http://www.expertvillage.com/video-serie watch the whole series I was able to change my brakes no problem after watching this and I had never done it before
I would grab a Haynes or Chilton brake manual to help you out. Also be sure to have a small set of hand tools to take the brake caliper off and some brake lube to put on the back of the pads where they attach to the caliper and also the edge of the brake pad where they touch the metal clips that are located on the caliper bracket. That will eliminate squeals and sqeaks.

    Honda Prelude 1999 Brake Pads?

How do I replace Honda Prelude rear brake pads. I do not want to buy costly manual just to learn how to change brake pads. If you can please show me a site with detailed images. If not, just tell me how. Thank you in advanceHonda Prelude 1999 Brake Pads?
If you are this lost you should really seek proffesional help, but if you are determined you can do it (and enjoy a HUGE savings). You MUST get a Hayne's or Chilton's Repair manual for your car. You can find this book at any auto parts store. It will contain step by step information and pictures with instructions.

A hint: only do ONE side at a time. That way, if you get mixed up as to how something goes in you can compare it with the side that is still together.

As a general rule, it is a lot easier to replace disc brake pads than to replace drum brake shoes. It sounds like you have disc brakes in the rear - that is good, it will be easier for the home mechanic.Honda Prelude 1999 Brake Pads?
I would just take it to a professional and not risk installing them incorrectly and causing a bad accident.

Does anyone know how much it will cost to change the brake pads and disks on my Citroen C2 1.1 04 car?

Above are estimates for front only

Why not just ring them - would take you all of 10 minutes?Does anyone know how much it will cost to change the brake pads and disks on my Citroen C2 1.1 04 car?
It all depends on where do you get it changed from. If you want to do it on your own, I will suggest you to buy pads from a standard spare parts shop which should cost you about 拢40 and that's it. If you want to get it done from a local mechanic, he can charge you upto 拢20 on top of it. If you are getting it done from an Autocentre then they will charge you around 拢100(including everything).

I will suggest not to use places like Kwik Fit, Nationwide Autocentres or any other express repair shops. they just charge you loads for nothing.

So best is to get it done from a nice autocentre which charge you a little bit extra from a local mechanic and lot less than Kwik Fit type of centres and gives you 1000% peace of mind.

Shop around and see who gives you best service and guarantees the service.

1 First jack up the wheel that you need to work on. Turn the lug nuts 1 full turn while wheel on ground, jack the car up and take out all lug nuts.

2 The wheel is out of the way, you should be able to see the brake caliper. Undo the bottom nuts, and entire caliper can be slide up and pads will fall out.

3 Before installing new brake pads, the old brake piston must be pushed back. I use 7'; C clamp.

4 Put the new pads in, place and tighten the caliper bolds %26amp; mount the wheel, and tighten the lug nuts.

pretty easy, but takes practice. I can usually do 30 minutes per wheel.

In step 3, some mechanics don't like to press all that brake fluid in reverse direction (they believe that it can harm ABS controller or brake master cylinder) so they might open up the caliper bleed valve and let the fluid come out instead of pushing it all the way up to the master cylinder. You would need to be careful not to introduce air in the system or you would need to bleed the system.

Also, my radio stopped working completely the fuses are fine how would i test the amp or replace it if necessary? How do I change the front brake pads on a 2003 dodge ram 2500 2wd truck w a 5.7l engine?
Changing breaks is simple. Please read this in it entirety before trying.

First you need to assess if you have warped rotors. If while breaking the vehicle surges under the pressure of the standard breaking not hard breaking then you have a warped rotor. You have to either remove them and take them to a local shop and have them turned or replace them all together. If you have one warped rotor it is best to have them both turned as pinpointing which one is warped is next to impossible.

Buy a Break Piston Compressor from your local Automobile Shop. Provided a link on what it looks like. While you are there buy the pads. You will want to get the premium or ceramic pads as they will last longer.

Now be prepared to get dirty.

Let the vehicle set for one hour if you just came back from the shop to have the breaks cooled down properly.

Open the hood and loosen the cap for the break reservoir. Do not add more fluid at this time. While performing this break replacement break fluid may spill out so loosely wrapping a rag around the break reservoir will catch most of it. DO NOT REUSE THE FLUID YOU CATCH AND PUT BACK IN THE SYSTEM.

Jack up the vehicle and place a jack stand under the control arm. That is for safety in case the jack fails.

Remove the tire and set aside.

Locate the caliper with the break pads in place.

Open the box that has the new pads. Examine the pads to make sure that you purchased the correct pads by comparing them while they are still on the vehicle. Pads have a metal side and a rough material side to them. After verifying that everything looks the same remove the two bolts that are on the back of the caliper. They are not the large 15/16 bolts they are probably 10mm or 12mm bolts.

Once they are removed, remove the caliper by sliding it forward from the top to the front of the vehicle and lift up. You can set the caliper on top of the rotor while working. DO NOT REMOVE THE BREAK LINE AS DOING SO WILL REQUIRE YOU TO HAVE TO BLEED THE SYSTEM.

Remove the outer pad make note of how you take it out and how it was positioned in the caliper. You may need a screwdriver to help release the clips from the caliper. Do not bend them.

Now leaving the inner pad in place use the piston compression tool and push the piston further into its cylinder. Make sure that you place the tool in the center of the piston and apply Even pressure until it bottoms out. You will know that because you cannot turn it anymore. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.

Open the box that contains the new pads. Locate the Inner pad and remove the inner pad from the caliper and replace it with the new one. Now put the outer pad in place. Return the caliper to its correct position back on the the rotor assembly and insert and replace the bolts. They should be torqued to 10 to 15 ft pounds no more. All vehicles are different so you may want to ask for the torque specifications on your model from the local repair shop.

Replace the tire and perform that same steps on the other side.

After you are finished make sure to tighten the cap for the Break reservoir and close the hood. Start the vehicle and slowly pump the breaks till they feel normal. Test drive it a short distance going slow. No more than 15 mph and test the breaks again. Works great.

Now go clean up you terrible. How do I change the front brake pads on a 2003 dodge ram 2500 2wd truck w a 5.7l engine?
If you dont know how to change your own brakes and have to ask on here how to change them. I would take it to a shop you dont want to mess the brakes up or anything in general in your motor.

I just need to know how to push back the caliper. I know not spelled right sorry. Please just step by step help would be great90 lexus ls 400 how to change front brake pads?
You can usually do this by taking the lid off of the reservoir and then putting a C clamp across one of the old pads and back of the caliper. (while the pad is in place)

Crank down on the C clamp slowly (so that no fluid shoots out of the reservoir) until there is enough space to fit the new pads and have them fit over the rotor.

This method doesn't open the system, so air can't get in.

(No need to bleed the system afterwards)

:)90 lexus ls 400 how to change front brake pads?
Always open the bleeder, then compress with a clamp or large pliers. After installing your brakes, take the top off the master cylinder, fill it up, and crack the bleeders one at a time for a few seconds to let it gravity bleed. If you dont open the bleeders to compress the caliper, you take a chance of forcing old/dirty brake fluid back into the master cylinder possibly damaging it internally.
Open the bleeder valve and push the pistons back. But you should remove the calipers, blow the pistons out with low (20psi) air pressure, clean out the calipers and carefully put them back together. Again you will need low air pressure. If you have never done this try and find a friend or someone that has to help you. Any dirt or crud in the calipers can cause the brakes to lock up.

Oh dear please don't mess about with the brakes on your car if you do not know what you are doing. Take it to halfords etc etc. When you are in hospital because you smacked into a bus because your brakes did not work you will be pleased you saved yourself a few quid. NOT
very easy if u no wot u doin
it depends on the type of brake caliper pistons that are fitted onto the rear of your car, some are the wind in type which need special tools and some are just push ins. if you are asking this question i would take it to kwik fit or a mechanic to have them done, its not just as simple as changing the pads, theres the bleeding thats involved too, if you dont bleed them properly in the correct sequence you will end up with spongy defective brakes.
    I aggree with many answers on this one. I have been a technician for more than 40 years and I really have to say ';If you have to ask on a forum like this then you do not have the ability to do this properly';

Have it done in the local garage they should charge you no more than an hour labour and their standard rate plus the VAT. They are more likely to do it properly and certainly better than you can

Sorry to sound a bit harsh but I use the road as well and I want to remain safe from the DIY mechanic
impossible to answer regretfully...as you and nobody knows what state they are in...why have the hassle...get the mechanic to do it...then its done right and hassle free
Hi there i am presuming that your in the uk if so i would agree with the other answers in that if you have no or little experiance take the car to a garage as a human life (or lives) dont compare to the amount of money you will save, over the yrs i have seen some horrendous crashes due to poorly maintained brakes and other poor repairs
Very straight forward if you know what your doing....If you dont you could get in all sorts of trouble and put yours and others life at risk! Take it to a garage its not a big job and a small price to pay for the sake of everyones safety.

How do i change the front brake pads on my Seat Leon 1.4S ?

Pictures would be very helpful. I have changed the brakes on a Citroen Saxo but needed a book for it. Can't find a book for the leon. I think it is just 2 bolts holding the caliper on but i need to find out for sure if this is the right way to do it.How do i change the front brake pads on my Seat Leon 1.4S ?
there should be two bolts that hold the caliper on if you undo the bottom one you can lift the caliper out the way and remove the pads once you have done that you need to whined back the piston on the caliper make sure the cap under the bonnet is removed before you do this once that's done put some copper slip on the back off the pads and then place then into the caliper holder put it all back together and you are done and don't forget to pump the brake pedal after hope this helps

I need instructions on how to change my brake pads on my '86 Plymouth reliant?

i am not sure which order to take out the bolts/screws . dont have alot of tools to work with, but need as much advice as possible. I am doing this all by myself, also ASAP please and thx.I need instructions on how to change my brake pads on my '86 Plymouth reliant?
Here is the link to the Auto Zone repair manual

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBrokerI need instructions on how to change my brake pads on my '86 Plymouth reliant?
Go to Autozone or other store and buy a repair manual. They are a wealth of information for the price you pay. But if you want a short description on disc brakes here you go. If disc looks shiny or has grooves you need to have it machined. You need the manual for disc removal. If disc is in good shape, remove pads. Then slowly compress the pistons with a clamp or other tool. Install new pads and check fluid level. That's the short of it. Buy the manual, well worth it.

How hard is it to change brake discs and pads on my car?

Have seen on some websites its not too hard a procuedure...

Car is an 89 Mercedes 230E (W124)How hard is it to change brake discs and pads on my car?
It's not that difficult. Buy yourself a manual for the vehicle. In there you will find a step-by-step procedure.

Only take one side apart, then you can check to make sure the replacement parts are installed correctly.

_ _ _How hard is it to change brake discs and pads on my car?
pedal cars dont have them do they
    it takes about 20 mins
Might be pretty difficult. Buy American!
it really depends on how much you know, it you dont know anything its not easy, dont forget it is important to have them right as your life may depend on them.
no disc brakes are not that hard to do, with basic tools you could do this with out a problem, just take off the tire, then unbolt the caliper take out old pads put in new ones slip off the old rotor and slip on the new one. bolt the caliper back into place then the tire goes back on and do not for get to torque that wheel.
    Fcuking hard!
It's easy, I did mine a few years back now, took about half hour or so, easier with a manual, but basically what you take out, put it back in the same order.

    Happy motoring...!
Don't know, I've never tried changing the disc brakes and pads on your car.
Unless you have a reasonable experience of car maintenance this job is best left to qualified people, a car with badly fitted brake parts is a lethal weapon, Most garages will do the job in around half an hour.
Your question was about discs and pads - not just pads. I've not done this on a Merc, but have on the front of a vectra. It is an easy job - if you have the right tools handy and if you have axle stands. I had to buy a special size and shape allen key for not much. Axle stands are not expensive - about 20 mins of a mechanics time!

Note - front discs are easy, rear are probably not. Rear disks usually incorporate the hand brake which complicates things enormously.

Get yourself a Haynes manual, read the front disk procedure and do it if you feel confident. You can always do the fronts yourself and get a garage to do the rear. This way you'll learn something and still save a shed load of money. You'll save on both labour (DIY) and parts - pattern disks are fine, mine have done about 40k miles.
Easy if you know what you are doing but as you have to ask the question then I am afraid that you do not possess the ability to do this properly. This is your brakes we are talking about and you really should take it to the shop

If you do it yourself and get it wrong it really could turn into a very bad day and it might just be me coming the other way
It's pretty straightforward mate. Get yourself to your local motor factor place (motoserv seem pretty reasonable here in the UK) and get yourself a set of pads and rotors (disks), teh appropriate allen key to take the calipers off, and some axel stands if you don't have any - thease are vital. I nearly took all my fingers off trying to remove the brake drum on the front of an old Morris Minor when the jack just let go and the car crashed to the floor. It was one of those ';jump up and down for 10 minutes shaking your hands'; moments.

Fisrtly, let the tension off the front wheel nuts (don't undo them completely, just loosen them), jack up the car, ensuring you have chocked the back wheels to stop it rolling back and crushing you to death, remove ONE FRONT WHEEL AT A TIME. Get yourself comfy, reach round the back of the caliper (where the pads go) and undo the allen bolt(s) holding it in place. The caliper should slide off pretty easily (note: just remembered - undo the lid of the brake fluid resoviour first of all to release the pressure!). With the caliper off, you should see a screw holding the rotor in place - undo this and slide the rotor off the hub. If it resists, give it a whack or 2. Put some anti-seize compound (coppaslip) on the new rotor where it joins the hub. Replace the screw(s). Prise the caliper apart (this is why you have to undo the lid on the fluid res first) and remove the pads, one at a time. Replace with new pads, after applying a thin coating of coppaslip to the back side - this will prevent ';brake squeal';. (If you are an enthusiastic driver, I would suggest some ';Green Stuff'; pads). Re-fit caliper exactly how you took it off, and tighten the allen bolts to the correct torque. Replace road wheel and repeat on the other side.

Total time for the first time you do it yourself will be about 40 minutes. You will have problems, but that's half the fun, hey??!!
Hi there im not trying to belittle you here but most technicians are trained both at work and at a local college or training centre hence why garage labour is charged at the rates they do, so unless you have a decent amount of experiance please think safety
unless youre experienced forget it and take it to a mechanic or it could cost you your life. Ive seen open-heart surgery on some websites and it doesnt seem too hard a procedure
Not very hard at all, if you have done pads before then getting the discs off is not a problem you might need a torx bit to undo the small grub screw holding the disc to the hub take them off and get the new ones and clean them with brake cleaner as they have a thin film of grease on to prevent rusting.

  • How to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?

Does the ABS need to be disconnected? Never changed brakes on a vehicle w/ ABS.How to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?
no u dont have to disconnect the abs just do the pads as u would anyother car .......1. take off tires 2. use a big screw driver or pry bar and colapse the caliper piston by inserting it in the opening on top of the caliper, be careful not to scratch the rotor with the screw driver or pry bar, ans do not open any lines before doing this or at any time during the job 3. take off caliper by loosening the 2 bolts on back of caliper 4. remove caliper from rotor and remove brake pads 5. clean the hardware on the caliper and lube it with either a light coat of grease or non drying silicone 5 if u use non drying silicone then apply it to the new pads( prevents the squeaking noises brakes make 6 u may have to finish colapsing the caliper piston if u do use a screw driver and place it on the edge of the piston and push it in the caliper 7. then place the caliper back on the rotor lining up the holes in back for the retaining bolts on the caliper 8. do other side when one side is done.... dont compress both caliper pistons at the saome time it will overflow the master cylinder ..... good luckHow to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?
Unbolt the caliper and replace the pads. Remove the caliper mounting bracket if the rotors are to be removed and machined.
p.s. Dont forget to take off the brake master cylinder cap to relieve the pressure when you compress the caliper piston with the screwdriver. Or, if you have a big c-clamp, wait till the caliper is off and compress it then. Go slowly so you dont spray brake fluid on your hood and fenderwells, cause it will eat the paint off, guaranteed!!

How come I have to change my BMW brake disc already?

Whats with this people wanting to change my brake disc of a 2 year car ?

I have a Toyota and I change the brake this like one time, and it have 14 years (2002)

I understood that the brake disc deteriorate if you dont change your brakes pads on time, when is needed

I have only change my brake pads on time and was on time, as soon as the light sensor went off, I change the pads

Now the sensor is on and I went where I bought the car to buy my pads but it seems they want me to change both front brake discs, so I went to another recognize BMW part shop and they told me I need to change the four of them!

I want second opinion on this cause I dont think its that neccesary or it deteriorate that fast

With your opinion I'll check again in a particular mechanics and see if Im a need of new brake disc

Thanks in advanceHow come I have to change my BMW brake disc already?
You really must not have driving your Toyota that much or did much braking in that vehicle, or your driving habits have changed with the BMW over the Toyota.

My wife's 2003 Corolla needs a brake job about every 18 months. She drives in very hilly areas and applies her brakes more frequently.

I drive a 2004 Pontiac Vibe (the same as a Toyota Corolla with a different upper shell). Have not had to replace the brakes yet and last inspection still had 50% of my brake pad left.

Brake pad replacement depends on your driving habits and braking frequency. It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion. (It rarely ever does), but not sure how you got 14 years on a single set of brake pads unless you didn't drive that much.

Ok, your talking about the disk rotors, I misunderstood your question. These days manufactures do make rotors out of cheaper metals to minimize brake noise. You can purchase rotors made from higher quality metals that last longer from an auto parts store. Just ask them for the higher quality rotors.

Most manufacturer's have a minimum thickness that is recommended for the rotors as well. These days they don't make rotors as thick to reduce weight and allow for better cooling of the brake area. This unfortunately amounts to having to change the rotors a bit more frequently. From personal experience this is typically every other brake job for the original OEM brake rotors. (ie you can get them turned(machined) once, but typically not twice)

Next time you have the brake rotors replaced, ask for the higher quality rotors. They are more expensive (typically by 50% more), but they will keep you from having to replace them as frequently. How come I have to change my BMW brake disc already?
Many new cars need complete brake overhaul after two years, when I first heard of this it surprised me as well. I think it has to do with the cars sitting on lot for long time and actually starting to rust and detoriate just sitting there. You would never think to pop off the tires and check out brakes before buying on a new car, but maybe you should.
BMWs are heavier, tires are wider, wheels larger and speeds greater which puts stress on the braking system.Brake repair produces the greatest profits and people do not resist because it is a safety issue.Air conditioning in Florida is a must so people bend over and accept the price for repairs. You could do the work yourself if you were the ultimate repairing machine,if mechanics make $50 an hour then every hour you spend under the hood is a pay raise.Get rid of those projector headlights before damage is done to your chassis and the loot fenced on eBay.
if the pads wernt grinding and there was not plusating of the brake petel or shaking the rotor its fine. normaly when u have your brake pads replaced they want to replace ur rotors.

How long does it take for a mechanic to change your brake pads on a 1996 nissan maxima?

From time of getting into the car, to doing all 4, properly (not the 15 min version from the other guy, hate to ride in his car), and then car parked back outside. Labor rate could be 1-2 hours. All depends on how bad they are, if bolts are seized up, if things won't come apart due to age, etc.

No job is set in stone as there are too many factors that can happen. How long does it take for a mechanic to change your brake pads on a 1996 nissan maxima?
it really doesnt even take that long, with all the tools they have it should take like 15- 20 minutes

dude asked for brake pads people not rotors! and yes i have had my brake pads changed in like 20 mins and nothin was wrong with my car what now huh?How long does it take for a mechanic to change your brake pads on a 1996 nissan maxima?
depends on if he is turning the rotors anywhere from an hour to 4 hours
With turning the rotors avg time is around 2 to 3 hours.
I can change all my pads AND rotors in my garage in about an hour. The longest part IMHO is jacking the car up and putting it on stands. And yes, when I do my brakes, I always change the pads AND the rotors.

As far as a ';certified mechanic,'; it's usually done in about 2 hours depending on their mood. If it took them 35 minutes you'll be charged an hour's worth of labor. I noticed that even though these ';certified mechanics'; are trained to observe what the service manual says (torque specs) they don't follow it. They use air tools that ridiculously overtorque the bolts.
    15 mins, give and take..
15-20 min but that's only a brake change no rotors involved

How to Change '00 Lincoln LS brake pads?

Is changing the brake pads in a '00 Lincoln LS the same as changing any break pads, or are special tools and directions needed?? I can't find anything in the manual about changing the breaks and don't want to spend the money to pay someone else to do it if it is something that I can do myself. How to Change '00 Lincoln LS brake pads?
I've not personally done a pad change on a 2000 LS but I would not expect it to be any different from any other Ford. I will assume from your question you've done pad changes before on other cars so I won't do a step by step procedure for you, but a good set of 1/2'; metric sockets, 1/2'; ratchet, and a 1/2'; breaker bar (unless you're super strong) is most all you'll need. It does help to have a pad expander tool to push the pistons back into their bores, allowing room for the new thicker pads. Don't let the caliper hang by its hose, suspend it with a coat hanger or zip tie while you work with it. And while you have it all apart turn the rotors. Hope this helps you a bit.How to Change '00 Lincoln LS brake pads?

Are we working on front brakes, or rear brakes? First step is to jack up and support the side of the vehicle we are working on. Next step is to remove the wheel nuts with an impact gun and a 19mm impact socket. You better go to your local Ford dealer parts department to buy a few extra wheel nuts because they strip VERY easily, due to the taper design of the wheel nuts. If it's the front brakes, using a 12 or 13mm wrench, loosen and remove the caliper bolts. Remove the brake caliper (these particular brake calipers are very light). Using the appropriately sized extension and a swivel 15mm impact socket and impact gun, remove the two caliper bracket bolts, taking care not to mistakenly remove the hub and bearing bolts, since they are so close to each other. Using one of the old brake pads rested on both caliper pistons and a pair of channel locks, compress the two pistons back fully. The brake rotors just ';knock'; off at this point. Install new brake rotor onto hub, and secure with two wheel nuts snugged up to temporarily hold rotor onto hub until pads and caliper are reinstalled. Lubricate brake pad contact surfaces with anti-seize, and reinstall brake pads onto bracket. Reinstall brake caliper. Reinstall wheel and repeat procedure for other side. BE SURE TO PUMP UP THE BRAKE PEDAL BEFORE YOU MOVE THE VEHICLE. Hope this helps.

I have disc brakes in the front and back. How often (miles or time) should I change the brake pads??

I have a 1995 Honda Civic EX by the way. The last time the brakes were changed was shortly before I bought the car from a private party last April of 2007. I haven't noticed problems stopping but then again I don't want to wait until they get to be paper thin to replace them either. I'd like to keep myself and anyone in my car safer with brake pads changed on a regular schedule just like changing my oil and filter. Thanks!I have disc brakes in the front and back. How often (miles or time) should I change the brake pads??
the fronts really do most of work i'd change every 10,000 miles do the back at same time hard to do... maybe 1/2 hour each wheel. do fronts first! get a friend to helpp.. it's good for convesation at least!I have disc brakes in the front and back. How often (miles or time) should I change the brake pads??
Hi, brakes change will depend on your braking habit. Hard braking means you will wear them out more. Gentle and gradual braking will conserve your brake pads. You can drive 100,000miles and hit your brakes once and they will be as good as new.

City driving with lots of stop and go will wear brakes more than open highway driving, so the type of driving will play a part in the wear of your brakes.

For disc brakes, you can see the brake linings on the brake pads and I will consider changing them in pairs on the wheels when the linings wore down to about 1/16th of an inch. You can still have effective braking with them still.

Your vehicle drive train will also wear brakes more. If you have a front-wheel drive car, the front brakes will tend to wear faster due to having stop heavier momentum, likewise the rear brakes for rear-wheel drive. Take a look at the brake pads for best gauge to replacing them.

If there is no damage other than normal wear, they should last at leat 10 thousand miles. and possibly even more i have 15 000 on mine. and i want to replace thms soon. they are allright they are just worn down too low to suit me. This has been 5 years for me. That would be about 3000 miles a year for me.
Most if not all cars with disc brakes have a little metal plate which rubs against the disc when you are getting to the stage where they need to be replaced, the wear indicator will make a screeching sound when it's time to replace the pads, my last set of pads lasted me 100,000 km's.
Disc brake pads have a sensor built in on them. It all depends on how much you drive your car. If your discs are smooth, your pads will last for a very long time. Listen for a scraping sound that will usually go away when you hit the brakes.
Have your tires rotated on a regular basis by someone that knows what they are doing. Each time they (or you), can visually inspect the pads and know how much pad you have left
A good breakpad should last up to 100,000 miles.
On all autos, with disk brakes, the brake pad has a flexible metal tab, that creates a ';skreching/rubbing'; noise when the thickness of the pad becomes unsafe. In most cars, the front wheels/brakes will wear faster than the rear pads. The amount that the car is used, whether in the city with a lot of stop and go traffic, or in the country, with long open driving condition, will determine the frequency of need to ';re-do your brakes';. Of importance, if you do hear the sound of scrapping/rubbing noise, if allowed to go too long, will cause your brake rotors to wear abnormally. Making additional cost of brake repair. Usually when detected early, changing the pads frequently will prolong the life of your rotor, and even the calipers holding the pad will last longer. Your oil, and engine maintenance will be required a lot more often than the need to replace your brake pads. Most auto service centers, will provide a courtesy walk around inspection of your car when you take it in for your routine oil change service. A sign of wear of your brakes, is sometime seen as a black dust/powder showing through your wheels.

remove calipers and brake pads. you will need a tool to re-collapse the calipers at the next step. its best to leave the inboard pad in place as a brace to collapse the caliper. then put anti-seize on all moving parts and install new pads. there are numerous different kinds of brake anti-squeal that is made, buy one and spray it on your pads. once pads are back in caliper, reinstall total unit. MAKE SURE that while you are in there you look at everything else in that area. Look at your CV boots, tie rod ends and ball joints. Also check the condition of your brake hoses. BE SURE TO PUMP THE BRAKES BEFORE ENGAGING TRANSMISSION!!! and if any of this stumbles you. DONT TOUCH!!! bring it to a shop.Changing brake pads on ford escort 1995?

In England, dealers charge about 拢85 for a set of back pads. And by sporty breaking i assume u mean screwing it into the ground, then anywhere from 6 months to 18months. Your more likely to stress fracture the discs than burn the pads out though.

I recently went to a car repair shop and these are the things that they want to do with my car... get new front and rear brakes, new front rotors, service front calipers and rear drums and bleed all system. The mechanic gave me an estimate of $454 including labor and parts. Is that a good deal or does that cost too much? My car is Nissan Altima 1999.How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?
Yes you have to change your brake pad as quick as possible before it causes major damage to your metal disc. But the price what he has quoted is expansive. $ 350 should be alright for the good breaking pad including the the labor cost. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?
I would ask about the ';service front calipers'; part. Most new calipers are self adjusting and not serviceable. The days of rebuilding calipers are pretty much over with. Unless the caliper is frozen in the slides or leaking there isn't much to ';service';. As far as the price goes I would say it sounds pretty fair. Probably about 2-2.5 hours of labor plus parts.
that's not a bad price for a shop to be doing the work, but the price for parts is about half that, the rest is labor.
Get another quote, but get it done quick or quit driving the car with bad brakes. Killing somebody because of money is just stupid.
I Just did all that on a Nissan Altima this morning for $300 (reputable shop)

I'm mechanically inclined, and there are ton's of ';how to's'; on line, but what I'm wondering is if it's generally unsafe to do this yourself?

Is it something I should let a mechanic handle? Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
In general, this is a pretty simple task to accomplish yourself. That said, it's not something that you can zip through in 15 minutes. Especially if you've never done it before. As long as you have all the info on the correct procedure, know what parts and tools you'll need, and have the time to do it right there's no reason to be concerned about changing your own brakes. Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
It is perfectly safe and simple. For disc brakes anyways because I have not done drums. Most small cars are discs in front drums on back and you do the fronts 5X as often as the backs. Bigger or more xpensive vehicles generally have all disc brakes. Have fun.
i have done all my cars for the last 10 years.... disk brakes are easier than drums though....
you can do it yourself, i do.it,s not that hard to do. you just have to know what to do.
front is not drums, they are disc. rear is drums. pads go on a rotor, or disc brakes, shoes go in a drum. pads are easy, shoes, not so much.

buy a mid-grade pad, get some brake silencer, or brake quiet, to put on the backside of the pads..... damper for vibration. 1 hr tops if you don't know what you're doing.
    its safe and easy.
You can do it yourself easy. Jack up the car and put axle stands under it. Remove both rear drums. Strip one side down ready for new parts then reassemble using the other side as a reference. Easy really.
you can do it just pay attention to how it comes apart the reverse it.

    good luck.
If you know what your doing it's completely safe.

No need to bleed the brakes.

Get a Haynes manual - library may have one - full instructions.

Not difficult, but dirty, except on such an old car there may be corrosion. Are the discs OK. If they are worn they will need to be replaced which is a bit more complicated.

Changing brake pads pulling off caliper?

when ever i try to change brake pads its either hit or miss....

sometimes when i pull off caliper the pistons and worn pads are pushed to the rotor making it impossible to slide in the new pads....

please note that i dont want to use a method that would break any seal around piston

how do i push em back or prepare my car for the maintenance?Changing brake pads pulling off caliper?
Use a C-clamp and press on the old brake pad ( pushes the piston back )

you first MUST remove the 2 caliper bolts and pull the caliper off the rotor. You do not have to remove the brake line though... Just try to balance the caliper on top of the rotor while working with it to push the piston back.. No brake bleeding required this wayChanging brake pads pulling off caliper?
In an automotive garage they usually have a tool for pushing the caliper pistons back into the caliper. It looks like a backwards pliers that pushes out with two plates on each side. This essentially pushes both sides of the caliper back in easily. You could try to find one of these or you can use channel locks to push the calipers back in a little at a time. Vise Grips will also work great if you have these tools. If not you can always try to use anything like a screwdriver or something like that to simply push the calipers back in.
I usually pry open the caliper a little with a big screw driver to release some of the pressure and then the caliper and pads come right off. Open the break fluid container in the engine compartment and get ready to soak up the overflow.

It is very hard to take them off if you do not release some of the pressure.
I use a 6 inch c-clamp. Leave one of the old pads in the Caliber against the piston and Tighten slowly, and do not be alarmed with fluid that might over flow from the master cylinder.
you use a c-clamp to push the piston back into its bore so the new pads will go over the rotor.you won,t break the seal. the seal is up inside the piston. what you see on the outside is the dust boot.

when you begin to drive the before you do that you should press on the brake pedal rapidly and ur set

Do yourself a favor and spend $10 - $12 at the auto parts store (Advance, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc.) for the Haynes repair manual specifically printed for your car's make, model, and year.

This manual will list the exact procedure step by step and will save you some frustration, and while you are at the store you can also get the parts (the pads), further you may find these tips helpful as well:

    It's really not hard, but...

    - Do ONE side at a time and finish one before you start the other, so you always have a completed brake set you can use for visual reference (where does this part go again?).

    - As a rule, most homeowner's tool sets is all that is required, but certain systems require a torx set for the bolts and a BIG C-clamp to push the piston back and a block of soft wood may be helpful as well.

    - For this reason, it helps to have a 2nd, fully functional automobile at your disposal, just in case you have to make another trip to the auto parts store in mid-repair.

After most folks do this once or twice, some wonder why they've been paying exhorbitant mechanic rates for this, it can be that simple... Some folks, however, gain a new appreciation for what mechanics charge and why, either way it's win-win.

    Good luck
What kind of car? It's usually pretty simple if you're at all mechanically inclined. Generally remove wheels --%26gt; remove rotors --%26gt; remove old pads --%26gt; reset calipers (sometimes take a special tool, available to rent at autozone for free) --%26gt; install new pads --%26gt; reinstall rotors and wheels.

You can also shoose to bleed the brakes before you put the wheels back on.

Get a manual on that model of Opel and it will tell you what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
i would take a guess that you are working on the rears? if im right that piston has to be rotated in order for it to go back in to make room for the new pads. rear calipers on a rear disc setup are kind of like a screw, so rotating them will make them go back in. direction im not sure of but you will know if you are going the right way because the piston length will get shorter, if your going the right way. if it gets longer rotate the other direction.

How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord?

I need to change my 2 front brake pads...my friend did it a few years ago and I watched him but don't remember much of it....but I think I can change them myself I just need to know what to do...

I know you need to raise your car and take off the wheel...from there it's pretty straightforward I'm assuming.

I have socket wrenches is that all I need? How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord?
I would suggest not trying this without hands on supervision. There are many things that can go wrong and you will not know how to deal with it.

As was stated the rotors may need to be turned. If the old pads went to metal the rotors will have to be turned or replaced.

The calipers have to be collapsed before the new pads can be installed. On some vehicles the calipers can just be compressed but some have self adjusting calipers that has to be turned(screwed) in. Care must be taken so as not to damage the master cylinder.

There are a lot of times that the brakes will have to be bled. If this is not performed properly the results can be catastrophic.

I don't know how old you are but there are some things , that if messed with, can shorten a life span. This would be a particular person's business but if your brakes go out at an intersection it might involve the lady and kids you knock into on coming traffic. How would I change the brake pads in my honda accord?
sure do it yourself and have fun too. and remember when you make a mistake it will only cause you to crash and /or kill someone else. if the rotors are undersized, you have to get new ones..if they have excessive run-out then they need to be turned. if you have to ask people how to perform vehicle maintenance then you don't need to be doing some of it that will possible affect other people. pay a professional. then the risk is on them not you.

you can do it without much thought for about 30 dollarsHow much will it cost to change my brake pads on honda civic, garage quoted $500?? is this too much??
Just do it yourself, it's something every car owner should know how to do anyway. $20 for the Chiltons manual, maybe $50 for the necessary parts and an hour of your time.
the pads are about 60 for the front and the same for the rear at the dealer we charge about 160 per front and 170 per rear so that 500 is wayyyyy high i work at a honda dealer and i have never seen a brake job that costs that....unless u need rotors! then yes its possible!
That is WAY too high!!! It should be right around $300 to do all four. Find a shop that is not trying to rip you off!!
From the way i read your question you just want the front done and if that is right. This garage is trying to ripe you off and cheat you. Find yourself another one and do not go back to the other one.

Here where i live at the adverge price per side is about 90 or so.

If you knew how to do this you could save yourself say around 150 or so.
Is that four all four wheels? If so thats a little high, if for only the front their crazy. Get a couple more quotes from other places before making your decision
if it just pad front and rear your getting ripped do it your self you may have to rent a tool for the rear calipers to screw them back in this is a east repair if you have any mechanical inclination .remember do one side at a time so you will have the other side for a referance
If it's only for the brake pads, then yes, it is WAY too much. Brake pads are simple and cheap enough where you can buy them at an auto parts store and slap them on yourself. No decent repair shop will charge $500.00 just to change the brake pads.

On the other hand, if the rotors need serious fixing (beyond the general buffing), that will cause a quote like that pop up. Last year, my brakes and rotors got so bad that I needed to replace them, and that cost about $400.
    YES!
that is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much to replace brake pads, I'm assuming its only the front ones, because you probably have drum brakes in the back which use brake shoes. but anyways, 90 with the pads included is what mieneke charges, per axel. so don't go back to that shop again!!!
Well heres what it would cost you. pads for the front $22 from autozone, pads/shoes for the rear $25 from autozone. Assuming you need rotors on ALL 4 wheels they are $24 each at Autozone. so we are up to $131. Now all it takes is about 45 minutes to change all 4. so they are really trying to rip you off. See if you know a friend that can do it for you. all it takes is a jack and some hand tools.
    That seems like a lot.

I'd find a friend who knows a lot about cars - even if he can't fix it for you, he can tell you where to go to get a good deal %26amp; good work.
That's a lot of cash. Those mechanics are shady. Do like me and teach yourself. Even if you fu*k up, I doubt it would cost you $500.00 to correct your mistake. Don't even go back to that garage.

I had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?

you reset it with a computer, take it back and make him fix it,free.

if your car has anti-lock brakes and he didn't open the bleeders on the calipers when he compressed them, that forced the fluid up to the ABS control and may have caused damage.

or just check the fluid level and tap on the side of the resevor, the float may be stuckI had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?
what kind of car is it and if its a newer model there is a sensor on the brake caliper that needs to be reset through the computer of the car so take the car back to the mechanic
take it back he didnt reset it right,
bring the car back and have him clear the computer of the break fault ... you need to learn some about mechanics ... how many wheels did he do ... you should do a pair not one ....you do 2 or all 4 ... doing just one wheel will make the brakes stop un evenly ... you are talking about disk brakes ... a lot of cars have front discs and rear drum brakes .. they work and are repaired very differently ... Find out more about your car and the repairs will be easier and cheaper ... A mechanic who senses you know about cars will not try to rip you off selling you stuff you do not need ....

How do i change the brake pads on my 2003 honda accord lx?

ive tried to do it myself but i cannot get the calipers to loosen is there some kind of special trick i dont know about? How do i change the brake pads on my 2003 honda accord lx?
OK so I started to simply make some suggestions and it turned out to be close to an actual answer so I'm putting it here as well for Gino.

Honda front brake pads are easy to replace compared to many other types. If you have less than 50,000 miles on the car you should not be worrying about the front pads. Since you are we'll presume you drive a lot like I used to and the concern is valid. Don't let dealers try to get you to worry about such things so they can make a killing on a repair.

    1) If you don't know where to start I would suggest going to your local auto parts supply (not the dealer!) such as Kragen, Shucks, Murray, Checker, or Advanced Auto Parts Stores. These are all owned by ';Parts America'; and the names are related to the area you live in. See their web site at www.partsamerica.com for the nearest location to you.

    2) Get a Chilton's auto repair manual for your vehicle. It will provide you with the details on how to change your brake pads. It will also tell you how to inspect them (after you jack the car up take the wheel off)to see if they are in need of replacement.

    3) If you decide to do this on your own, you will need some simple tools. First suggestion I tell my friends is before you start to do anything to remove the caliper is to turn the wheel a few times. When the car is stopped the front brakes tend to stay close to the wheel. If you don't know the air that is generated when the car is moving creates an air cushion that keeps the brake pads away from the rotor. By turning the wheel first you will loosen this enough to make it easier to do the job.

    4) Second thing before you remove the caliper is to examine the disks. You will be able to see about 3/4 of the disk at a time because the caliper blocks your view. Because you turned the wheel before removing it you should be able to turn the disk grabbing the lug bolts that the wheel attached to. Please DO NOT touch the rotor with your hands. These need to be clean at all times. What you are looking for is to see if the rotors are worn and need replacing. Starting at the part closest to the hub follow the profile of the rotor surface to the outer most part. The surface should be smooth, have no discoloration, and with a 2003 vehicle there should be almost NO ridge at the outer edge (1/4 inch). I have a 2002 CR-V and there is no ridge on my rotors. My wifes '97 Accord has 84,000 miles on it and just a bit of a ridge; This is acceptable wear. (bye the way I didn't have to replace her brake pads until the car hit 70,000 miles.) If you see any significant ripples on the surfaces then you have spent too much time with your foot on the brake. If you have anything other than smooth rotors you should consider having someone qualified (with experience that is) work on it. Find a friend because ';Turning the Rotors'; requires knowledge and a machine shop is not a fun job nor anything to be taken lightly.

    5) Gather the tools (Wrenches will be METRIC) and follow the instructions in the book to remove the rotors. Remember they are fairly heavy as they are made of cast iron for durability. They will remain attached to the car via the brake hose. DO NOT attempt to remove them, this would make a big mess and add to the cost. I do recommend you have a box like a milk carton crate and a couple of smaller items available to stack up as necessary to rest the caliper upon.

    6) A large ';C-Clamp'; is always useful to push the ';Puck'; pack into the caliper. This must be done so that the thicker pads can fit between the caliper and the rotor. The C-Clamp will have to have an opening of at least 6 inches to be useful. Be careful not to place the c-clamp at an angle or you can jam the puck. I like to use a piece of 1/4 inch plywood across the entire puck surface and that way pressure is placed evenly around the puck as you gently tighten the clamp thus pressing the puck back into the caliper.

    6) Make sure you DO NOT touch the face of the new pads with dirty hands or they will have a tendency to squeak. The dirt and/or oil from your hands should be removed prior to installing the pads into the caliper.

Chilton's books will provide you with a list of tools usually required to do the job and the specifications for your car. The pads should run between $40 and $75 depending upon where you live. The book will become your best friend if you intend to do maintenance of this type in the future so look at it as an investment in long term savings.

just go to the auto parts store they sell books that will tell you how to basicaly tear your car down and put it back together.
nasioc.com, they are good people and can help you out for sure, but basicly here it is, jack the car up, remove the wheels, remove the caliper (2 bolts on the backside bolting it to the hub, pull the pads out, open the cap to the master cylinder(where the brake fluid goes) anduse a c clamp to push the piston back in the caliper, to make room fro the new (thicker) pads, make sure its compressed enough to slide the calipre with the pads in it onto the rotor, bolt it up, start the car and pump them a few times, then replace the cap on the fluid resivor. you may have to have the rotors turned
It's the same as any other car.

Ive done this million of times. Once you do it, its easier next time. I'm guessing it's disc,so, nope, the claiper can stay put, just loosen the one bolt ont he botton of the calliper, and the cover should lift up, from botton to top ini a outward motion, like lifting up a car hood.

Then use a screwdriver to loosen the pads on each side, and take em out.

Same way to install, stick one end of the pad int the slot, then the other end.

Do it once, you'll get the hang of it..All cars are the same, some might have diff procedures...But basically universal. How to change front brake pads on a renault espace?
Here is a generic front pad replacement example. Your car will be similar. And, yes, in general, the calipers have to be removed to replace the brake pads. The caliper cylinders must be pushed back into the calipers to allow space for the extra thickness of new pads.

I am a mechanically inclined person with not much auto experience. It just costs so much to have a shop put on new rotors and most of the time they hose you on the parts.I have a 2001 Impala how hard is it to change the brake pads and rotors out?
Disc brake pads are easy. Once the caliper has been removed, the rotor should slip right off the studs, although there is probably a retaining clip you'll need to remove if they're never been off before. It would be worth your while to go to Autozone and pickup the Haynes manual for a 2001 Impala ($15-$16).I have a 2001 Impala how hard is it to change the brake pads and rotors out?
changing the rotors and brake pads is pretty easy, you may have to remove some long bolts going through the caliper, or use a hammer and punch to drive out a bracket holding the caliper together. most have bolts holding the caliper together. but one thing to remember is when you push the piston back into the caliper, be sure to crack open the bleeder screw so that you do not force brake fluid back up through the abs(if it has abs) or up back in to the master cylinder which could flip the seal on it causing it to leak. also a good habit would be to use a c-clamp to push back the piston, but use one of the old brake pads against the piston so that it doesn't damage it. as for the rotors, they should just slip off, unless there is a retaining clip that u would have to remove, but it easily comes off in most cases.oh and be extremely sure to tighten the bleeder screw back up or else you will get air in your lines causing u to have a spongy brake pedal and causing you to have to bleed your brakes.just don't over tighten them. if the bleeder screw begins to strip, do not continue to unscrew it as it may snap. if it snaps or strips you may need a new caliper unfortunately. hope this helps
there are two bolts that hold the caliper on two the mounting bracket. I think they are 14mm. you'll probably have to retract the piston in the caliper to get the pads to clear the rust ridge on the rotor. Use a big C-clamp around the caliper and push on the back of the outboard pad. After you take off the caliper, you can use the c-clamp and the inboard pad to retract the piston all the way. There are two bolts that hold the caliper mounting bracket on to the knuckle. I forget the sizes of the bolts. Actually, I think that the caliper bolts may be 12mm and the mounting bracket bolts may be 14mm. You'll have to remove the bracket if you are replacing the rotors. But, unless you have a brake pulsation, excessive scoring or pitting, you shouldn't have to replace the rotors or have them resurfaced. In fact, gm doesn't recommend resurfacing the rotors for just replacing the pads. Only for the reasons I just mentioned. Overall, it's a pretty simple job. Quite self explanatory.

Go to AutoZone or Schucks and get a manual. This is a half hour job for someone experienced, maybe two if it's your first time.

Generally you need to clamp the rotor to compress the cylinders back into the rotors to make room for R %26amp; R. In most modern cars, you remove the retaining pins, and the old pads will slide right out. Don't change one side though, DO BOTH SIDES.How to change the brake pads in our 1995 geo prism?

Jesus christ it ain't rocket science. Take of the tire, remove pads, replace pads, put the tire back on. Wow I've been changing pads and rotors since i was ten.
well in fact its really simple, you just need the tools,

the brakes have 2 main bolts, take them off and they should be like 5 inches long they connect the 2 pieces that connect and preasure the pads in, then when pads are changed you need at least a big C-Clamp to pinch in the brake pistons, just check out the site it probably be better than my simple explanation

it really depends on how much experience you have with changing brake pads. ive changed quite a few in my life so i would have to say a 2 (and yes i am a girl lol)
If you have never changed brakes before a 10, get a friend who knows how to do it help you and then the next time you will know how.
That depends. For a very pregnant woman? Probably a 9 or 10. Normally, probably a 7.
If you have all the right tools it should be a two.
lets say you have did brakes before and say a 2
if you have to ask its a 12

How to change brake pads for ml350?

That would depend upon the year of your car. Mercedes has been introducing an active braking system, the hydralic pessure for the braking system is made from an electric motor and the braking system is under constant pressure.

The computer controls the braking and prevents the pads from closing unless the brake pedal is applied. To disengage the pump you must hook up the computer and have it release the brake pressure. After you change the pads/rotors you need to activate the braking system and calibrate it to the new pads/rotors.

If you do not have this system then it is fairly easy and similiar to the other common braking systems used. How to change brake pads for ml350?
I believe that you should drive to the nearest Mercedes service center. Hand your keys to the man/woman behind the counter and ask the same question. Hand them your credit card and wait approximately 1 hour. Finally drive home. Repeat as necessary. How to change brake pads for ml350?
    go to a brake mechanic
It's pretty much the same as any other car. The only thing special is that they have brake wear sensors ($2.00 piece of wire and plastic) that need to be replaced when you do the brakes. I think there are two on an ML, although it could be four.

On the fronts, you unbolt the calipers from the back. Two bolts, then pull the caliper right off. The pads come out the bottom of the caliper. Crack open the bleeder and push the pistons back into the caliper. Use a wire coathanger to support the caliper while you work on the rotor. The rotors have small allen screws that hold them in position..one on each rotor, I think they're 6mm. Unscrew them, pull off the rotor, and put your new one on. Back to the calipers. Insert the pads from the bottom, installing the wear sensors. Slide the caliper back in place. You should use new bolts to reinstall it, although I rarely do.

The rears are similar, except the calipers are fixed, and the pads are removed by driving out the support pins with a 5mm punch. On the rears, you may have to beat the rotor hubs with a nice big hammer to get the old rotors free of the parking brake.

Once your done, bleed and flush the system with fresh brake fluid, topping off the reservoir.
any mechanic can do that for you

  • How do you change the brake pads for a 2002 Dodge Intrepid SE?

Do you need any special tools and do they need to be bled afterwards. ThanksHow do you change the brake pads for a 2002 Dodge Intrepid SE?
no it doesn't take no special tools just a good metric socket set and good c-clamp to press the calipers back in with and no bleeding required to replace the pads, just don't loosen any lines up on it and you wont have to do no bleeding on it,make sure you have the rotors checked or it may cause brake pulsing to appear in the brakes, good luck. How do you change the brake pads for a 2002 Dodge Intrepid SE?
if i remember correctly you need a 14mm socket and a ratchet, an 8 inch c-clamp to push the pistons in...

if you don't disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, you shouldn't have to bleed the brakes....
Wow you do not want to be messing with your brakes if you dont know what your doing...................But if you really need to you could probably find a (how to video) on youtube

    good luck

How to change rear brake pads on mazda 3?

I can not get the calipers to go in the way they should. Is there another step that I do not know of to help this out?How to change rear brake pads on mazda 3?
Have a look at this run-through maybe it will help:

http://www.2carpros.com/how_to/rear_brakHow to change rear brake pads on mazda 3?
You have to release the emergency brake pre load.

There should be an access plug on the back of the caliper for this (you will need an Allen wrench most likely).

This allows the piston to be withdrawn into the cylinder.

You will also need to tighten it down to a point of a little drag to get the hand brake to work right.

With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?

    http://videos.howstuffworks.com/discovery-turbo/33715-turbo-changing-brake-pads-video.htm

This video shows how to change brake pads, but here's my question. My dad knows how to change them, but he's afraid to do it with cars with ABS systems on them, fearing he'd somehow ruin it. Is there any difference? If so, could you link me to a video, or just tell me?With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
Remember to have your brake fluid changed every 2-3 years. Other than that, the pads are pretty much the same. Uswe ONLY the genuine brake fluid for your particular car found at your dealership. NEVER mix different brands of brake fluid together. Disaster follows, on down the road! With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
Depends on what kind of vehicle we're talking about. Early automotive applications of ABS would have a reserve pressure. That would be the ABS accumulator. Such accumulators are designed to hold a high PSi in the system. Red flag's up here. Follow all warnings and recommendations by the vehicle manufacturer. Especially when performing brake work.

    Best wishes and stay safe.
Explain to your dad that the ABS system is a sensor and ring attached to the hub - it has no bearing on the actual calipers and brake pads - which are generally the same parts on any specific vehicle whether the vehicle has ABS or not.
abs systems have a sensor usually located somewhere on the axle or on the spindle /mounting area. usually has a single wire attached to it. as long as you do not damage this or bend it etc. the procedure for changing pads is the same.
No difference. The calipers themselves don't have any ABS components in them.

Changing some wheel discs might affect the wheel speed sensors, but even these are quite simple.
It doesn't look any different. You will see the sensor, but it is inboard from where the pads are.

this shud help u outHow do i change the brake pads on my corsa?
Unless you are a mechanic, (and I don't think you are if you're asking this question!) I would take it to a garage and get them to do it for you. If you don't know what you are doing it could be dangerous.
    try this

    go to:

    http://www.marshallpl.org

    scroll down, on the lower left hand side of the screen you will see a little box that says ';EBSCO HOST';

    click the box

it will bring up a sign in screen.

    enter User ID: marshall

    password: public

this takes you to a page of useful links. click on the link titled auto repair reference center. choose your vehicle and year.

this will bring up a list of auto manuals for your vehicle.

it also gives several wiring diagrams for most vehicles. most of the wiring diagrams are in PDF form and you can either download them for use at your convenience or you can print them. you can also print almost every single page on their site.
remove the wheel undo the bolts holding caliper on. push piston back replace pads and put calipers back on

Mintex part number for pads MDB2073

    discs if solid MDC1453

    discs if vented MDC1454

you also get it in a disc and pad kit which is MDK0149
Brakes are really important, my advice would be. If you have any concern about doing the work yourself don't take a change, take the car down to your local garage.

If you do it yourself, its really straight forward to go. Just take your time and make sure you re-fit all the parts that came off.

If the pads are badly worn, when you push the pistons back into the callipers. Make sure that the brake fluid in the reservoir does not over flow into the engine bay.

    Ja.
its fairly simple get either a 12 or 13'; spanner undo the bottom bolt of the caliper. you can push the piston back with a screwdriver. lift the caliper up and the pads should just slide out, if they dont just pry them out with the screwdriver clean with wire brush and then simply replace pads (make sure the pads go on same side they come out cause they are different). After, just tighten the bottom bolt you took out.Just check the top one just in case to make sure better safe than sorry.
Invest in a Haynes manual. Use Ferodo pads, they are better than the originals.
keep the brake pads and get rid of the corsa
