I am no mechanic,but quite capable of using tools and have carried out parts that have needed changing in the past.However,changing the pads is a more technical kind of work and needs done correctly for ovious reason.I have seen on the web that a special tool is required in order to depress the piston.
I would like some advice,also that advice maybe to leave alone and use a garage or someone with this experience,thats alright,no offence.

Hi there it is a lot easier to change brake pads than brake shoes. as you say you are capable to use tools and have done in the past. once you have the Wheel off you will be able to suss out the procedure for taking of calliper you either have to take the whole thing of or just the brake pad holder.
as to needing a special tool well if it is a pressure calliper then All you need is a lever to push the piston back in before you take off calliper, if it is a screw piston then i usually find vice grips or adjustable wrench suffices to screw it back in to calliper. It's actually rather easy but if you haven't seen it done yourself then have it done professionally. It's not an expensive repair so since your life depends on doing it correctly why take a chance, and since it will be your first time doing it if you damage something it could become expensive. It's probably about one hours labor and new pads are inexpensive. It might be a bit more than that if your rotors need to be turned or replaced. I'll guess at about 150 Euros.
I always use a C clamp as long as the piston is compressed evenly and you do one at a time.
Brake pads are normally fairly simple to replace. Remove the wheel, then you will normally have some bolts to undo to release the caliper, take the old pads out, clean up any flaky rusty bits off the caliper slides and then reassemble. Normally a G clamp is all you need to push the caliper piston back far enough to allow it to fit with the new (thicker) pads in place.
If you have any doubt about what you are doing, ask a competent person to give you a hand, or get it done by a garage. Brakes are not the sort of thing to get wrong on a car!

Brake calipers & changing brake pads.?
On my 98 Grand Prix I just got the calipers off and took out the old brake pads. I am now attempting to put in the new pads. But they are so thick that they do not fit. My guess is that I need to create more room by pushing the piston in farther. But how do I do that?Brake calipers %26amp; changing brake pads.?
I sometimes use a large ';C'; clamp. I clamp the back of the caliper to the old pad and tighten slowly to push the piston all the way in. Tighten the clamp real slowly to keep from pushing the fluid too fast and to keep the piston straight.

some are compressed by force and some require a tool that you twist and when twisted the piston goes in. Try a large wrench or clamp and use the old pads to protect the piston and seal and see if you can push the piston back in. If it doesn't move slowly then the piston needs to be turned to be put back into position. If that is the case go to kragens, autozone and rent the tool.
To easily tell if it is the type that twists in see if there are perpendicular groves on the piston. Basically looks like a screw that would require a very large phillips head.

I use a huge (HUGE!) pair of channel lock pliers. A c-clamp or other device can also work. If it won't budge, you can loosen the bleeder screw to reduce the hydraulic pressure.
USUALLY, if the piston is a hollow-like tube, then they can simply be compressed using a large c-clamp. DONT forget to pop the top off of the master cylinder!!!!! And do this slowly, so you don't rupture the brake line. If the piston is solid-looking with a cap on the end, these are the type that has to be ';screwed'; back in. I have had success using a pair of pliers/channel locks to turn it while I tightened the c-clamp.
Don't loosen your brake lines!! You'll introduce air into the system and have squishy brakes.
Take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir, and take a 'c' clamp and very slowly recompress the piston. Compress it all the way, and the pads will slot in easily. You may have to take some fluid out of the master cylinder, as you compress the caliper piston the level will rise. (Don't spill it, it will eat paint like nobody's business.)
If you don't have a c clamp, use whatever tool will recompress it. but make sure the piston is flat while you're pushing it.

If it is the fronts, you need to compress them.
If you go to the auto zone site you can find a repair guide for this car.
Either with a piston depressing tool or a C-Clamp and block of wood.

I doubt it being a 98 it's a worm gear piston but check to be sure. Some calipers (again, I highly doubt it) use a worm gear to resses the piston. Check for a hex nut on the side of the caliper and turn that counter clockwise.
You can buy the proper tools from Autozone. It cost me $13.00. Its a special tools to push the caliper piston back in. Just ask them and they will sell you the right tools...
The cheap and effective way out is go to Sears and get an adjustable screw carpenters clamp. Place an old brake pad across the caliper piston, slide the clamp behind the caliper and screw the adjustment part of the clamp directly on the old brake pad. The piston will detract fully.

Prise them out %26amp; you can then undo the long bolt underneath with a 7mm Allen key - You may be able to undo the front one %26amp; then 'swing' the pad carrier up to replace the pads - if not, just undo the second allen bolt.

brakes are wicked easy and really aint tat expensive. unless you need new rotors. DO NOT BUY AUTO PARTS FROM WAL MART! especially something as vital as brakes. go to a good auto parts store (NAPA, Advance Auto, Auto zone, National Auto, etc.) an 05 Malibu im pretty sure has disc brakes in front and drum in back. a set of brake shoes for the discs is usually 30ish. and for the drums, usually like five or ten bucks more. remember NAPA does offer a AAA discount :-) go to napaonline.com or advanceautoparts.com to order parts online or to get a part number and call in the order. thats what i always do. it saves the frustration of going to the store only to find they dont have the part and then having to go back down to the store to get the part the next day after they have it shipped in.How much does it cost to change break pads? how much for brake pads( from walmart)( 05 malibu)?
Do NOT buy parts from WalMart. They carry junk. Go to a reputable auto parts store. Please ignore Thomas's comment about not machining the rotors. He is obviously not a mechanic. The rotors should be resurfaced every time you replace the pads.
Go to the websites of parts dealers like Pep Boys or O'Reilley's, they price the parts for you.
DON'T BUY AUTO PARTS FROM WAL-MART, THEY HAVE CHEAP LOW QUALITY PARTS.
BRAKES ARE IMPORTANT GO TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE OR A DEALERSHIP THAT SERVICES YOUR MAKE OF CAR.

brake pads parts depending on your car can be $30-80. installation should not be more than about $100. if they are not vibrating - tell them NOT to machine the rotors. they will charge you for rotor machine whether they do it or don't.
i suggest somewhere other that Walmart.

How to change front brake pads on a 2004 ford focus?
It is very simple to change the brake pads on a ford focus. You will need a hex key set and something for leverage(metal pipe works well).
Open the hood and take off the cap for the brake fluid. Take off the wheel and there are two rubber pieces with plastic caps in the tops of them, one on top of the caliper and one on the bottom of the caliper. If you remove the plastic caps there is a hex bolt under each of them. Take those bolts out with the hex key and pipe for leverage.
Once you do this you will be able to take the caliper off of the bracket holding it over the rotor. When you have the caliper off you will be able to take the outside pad off (just release the clip with a screwdriver and push it in). After that take a C-Clamp and while the inside pad is still on Compress the caliper piston back to its lowest setting. After this remove the inside pad, it should have a clip on the back of it which fits inside of the hollow caliper piston. From here you should be able to reverse the steps and put everything back on. Just make sure that you use the spacers/squealer plates and use the grease from the brake pads on the outside of the pads to reduce noise.
After one side is complete, put everything back together and lower the car and go inside the car and slowly pump the brakes until you have good pressure than complete the other side. After you finish the other side, make sure to put the cap back on the brake fluid and you should be ready to go.
